Callum Johnson wants world title shot against Artur Beterbiev to be final tribute for dad

Callum Johnson is sitting on the edge of the ring. Just days away from a world title fight, he looks strong and athletic. But there are tears running down his face.

The British light-heavyweight champion's father, Paul, passed away suddenly in February 2016 at the age of 52.

Six months later Johnson claimed the Commonwealth title - but then came the crushing realisation that he could not share it with the one person he wanted to.

This Saturday, at Chicago's Wintrust Arena, Johnson will bid to pay the ultimate tribute to his late father when he takes on strong favourite Artur Beterbiev for the IBF world light-heavyweight title.

"If I win the world title, it will be everything, a dream come true," Johnson tells BBC Sport, fighting his emotions.

"For my dad, just the thought of it brings me to tears. I can just lay that belt with him and say 'we did it'.

"It's the last thing I can do for him."

'It was our career, not just mine'

No stone is being left unturned in search of victory this weekend - and the inner peace that may bring.

As we watch Johnson train, two weeks before his first world title shot, those coaching him are almost silent in respect of the physical torture he is going through.

Trainer Joe Gallagher - who recently guided Callum Smith to world glory - knows his charge is hurting. He spars with rotating partners, then moves on to pad work where he grimaces before collapsing to a stool between three-minute rounds.

His lungs can barely gulp in air quickly enough.

"My dad started me out in this game and was involved all the way through it," says Johnson. "He'd always tell me how good I was and always said I'd fight for world titles one day. It's so nice to be able to give him that. He'd be over the moon.

"I think I made him the proudest man on the planet just by him watching me train. Where I'm at now, I'm sure he has the biggest grin upstairs."

Johnson, who hails from Boston, Lincolnshire, won Commonwealth Games gold in 2010 and mouthed "that's for you dad" down the camera. His professional journey was about to begin.

But it was one that would be blighted by injury and setbacks, resulting in just 17 fights - all wins - in eight years.

His dad witnessed 14 of them, right up until titles started to arrive. Just 13 days after Johnson and his partner had brought a baby into the world, Paul's loss rocked the family.

"The day I buried my dad I promised I'd win the Commonwealth and British titles for him," adds Johnson. "When I finally got it, it was a weight off my shoulders.

"I can live in peace knowing I am fulfilling the promises I made. When you make someone a promise and they are still here, it's probably easier to break it. When you make one to someone who is not here and they have passed, you can't break it.

"It was our career - not just mine, ours. When I'd go out running there were no street lights where we lived so he'd be behind me with the lights on, beeping me if I slowed down. He lived and breathed every part of my boxing career."

Sparring done, another round is delivered on the heavy bag, where sweat falls steadily like rain on to the rubber floor as he delivers two minutes of shots before finishing the round with a minute of bunny hops over a balance beam. He repeats the three-minute segment, digging in as his arms fail on the bunny hops.

Johnson, who spends his evenings in a Bolton bedsit during training camp, looks like he's on the red line, yet finishes with two rounds of shadow boxing, wearing ankle weights to add to the suffering.

There is a relief. Another session ticked off. Tonight he will workout again, this time in the pool.

With his torso bulked out with muscle, Johnson's physical challenges look surmountable. Mental challenges are more complex. His advice for anyone dealing with the trauma of grief is straightforward - talk about it and realise that overcoming it is a very personal fight.

Other than laying his Commonwealth title on his dad's grave, Johnson spent six weeks without leaving his bedroom after winning the belt in September 2016. A career high brought home all that was missing.

When he briefly breaks down during our interview, he admits such a moment "would have sent him to bed for three days" a year ago.

"I started struggling with day-to-day life," he adds. "Christmas came in 2016 and I thought after it I'd be OK but it wasn't.

"Grief is a process. When you are that close to someone and have that strong of a bond, it's hard to deal with. You miss them so much.

"I don't know how to describe it as I don't think there's a right and wrong way to deal with it but I went through a bad time and have thankfully learned how to adapt, adjust and deal with it."

Russian Beterbiev, 33, was a decorated amateur and has knocked out 12 opponents from 12 as a pro. It is a formidable challenge and the Montreal-based fighter starts as short as 1-12 with some bookmakers.

    His opponent, though, is unfazed.

"I've been written off since I was a 16-year-old kid," says Johnson, who stunningly upset the odds last time out, when he snatched the British title from the respected Frank Buglioni in just 90 seconds.

That said, in looking ahead to this weekend's fight he is pensive, his answers sincere and considerate.

"At this stage, late on in camp, you're thinking about the fight all the time. What could be? What will be? You visualise things in your head, winning, things that may work.

"You really have to try to knock out any negative thoughts, so it's all positive stuff from now on. The bad things do creep in too. The key is to be as positive as you can.

"The win against Frank really showed people in British boxing what I'm capable of doing. Those around me spoke of what I was capable of but I suppose not many had seen it. It was nice to show it was the truth.

"I know I am up against it and I know I'm an underdog. But on my day, I can knock out anyone in the world, so let's hope it's my day."

Sat on the ring-edge he explains his boxing journey is yet to yield the money required to make his future comfortable.

A win in the Windy City would be a likely gateway to lucrative opportunities. Johnson is an underdog eyeing the chance to change his life. This sport is full of them.

But this time around, there is a deeper meaning than purses, splits and status. This is the ultimate bout for dad.

"It would put a perfect ending to a bad story," says Johnson. "I could forever live in peace and that's what I intend to do for him."

Vargas vs. Dulorme: Jessie Vargas is fine being viewed as a 'true gentleman'

CHICAGO — When you look at Jessie Vargas inside and outside the ring, he has the makings of being one of the faces of boxing.

The 29-year-old has movie-star looks, is a former two-division world champion, has fought on the grand stage against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Adrien Broner and Timothy Bradley, and is ranked the No. 3 welterweight by every major boxing sanctioning body. Yet, we don't talk about Vargas as being among the elite fighters in boxing's glamour division. Why? Well, the answer is pretty simple.

He's fine with being a quiet gentleman.

"Like (Hall of Fame referee) Joe [Cortez] said, I try to stay 'fair [but] firm.' It’s just the way I was brought up," Vargas told Sporting News ahead of Saturday night's main event, in which he will face Thomas Dulorme in Chicago, live and exclusively on DAZN. "I have respect for each and every person in this sport whether they’re promoters, managers and especially the fighters. They deserve all the credit because without the fighters, what sport would we have? We appreciate the managers and promoters who help us out. It’s just having mutual respect towards your opponent, knowing once you get in that ring, you have to go for the kill."

"But outside the ring, you can be a true gentleman and it's just how my parents brought me up. I just have respect for everyone ... and not be very flamboyant," he added. "I live a good life. I’m financially stable and financially set. I don’t like putting it out there. It shouldn't be anyone else's business how I live or don’t live, but more than anything, I want to show them the person that I really am. I'm genuine and show who I am what I am."

For the 2008 Olympian, it boils down to self-belief and not putting himself in some of the situations in which his peers have put themselves.

"Confidence has a lot to do with it," Vargas said. "I’m a very confident fighter and because of it, I am who I am. I have mutual respect towards the fighter I’m going to go against, but I don’t see it as anyone better than me or lesser of a fighter than me. I do see myself as the better fighter. But I mean as a person, I try and see it from every perspective. I check myself a lot. I look at myself and ask myself, 'What type of man do I want to be? What type of man am I?'"

He continued: "I look back at the flaws or the things I didn't like and the things I don’t respect in other people ... I make sure not to do those same mistakes."

The stakes were raised for Saturday's headliner when it was announced recently that Vargas (28-2-1, 10 KOs) and Dulorme (24-3, 16 KOs) would battle for the vacant WBC silver welterweight title. For Vargas, it is a chance for one of boxing's good guys to again put a belt around his waist.

"The WBC title is very significant in the sport," he said. "It’s actually a childhood dream that I've had in becoming world champion. And I know that the championship is a silver, but it brings me closer to the gold. That’s why I’m working so hard to become the WBC world champion."

Anyone watching this card? Sitting here still contemplating subscribing. Like to see Beterbiev and Roman but the main 4 fights seem pretty predictable.

That last article isn’t true. Nobody considers Vargas elite at WW because he clearly is not among the best.

McDonnell bleeding from the nose in the 5th. Small break in the action to return McDonnells mouth piece near rounds end.

    Roman scoring with nice uppercuts.

    4-1 Roman.
