Terence Crawford next fight: Welterweight star reportedly close to fight with shock opponent Luis Collazo in next title defence

It is claimed that the bout would take place on March 23 in New York

Terence Crawford is reportedly closing in on a deal to defend his WBO welterweight title against Luis Collazo.

The story comes as a shock to most boxing fans as the champion appeared to be headed for a fight against Lithuania’s Egidijus Kavaliauskas next.

Crawford and Kavaliauskas are both signed to Bob Arum’s Top Rank, however BoxingScene claim that an agreement is nearly complete for Bud to defend against Collazo next – despite the fact he is aligned to Al Haymon’s rival organisation, PBC.

The WBO ruler claimed his title by knocking out Jeff Horn in June and then made his first defence with a stoppage of Jose Benavidez in October.

Meanwhile, the challenger was last seen beating Bryant Perella in a ten-round undercard bout in August.

It is understood that the fight is being targeted for March 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Luis Collazo, 37, won a WBA welterweight belt in 2005 and has since failed on two subsequent challenges against Andre Berto and Keith Thurman.

He has also lost to two Brits in Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton, but will now get another shot against pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford, 31, who is a three division world champion.

Really expected better of Crawford if he's being called out by Spence and considered among top p4p. Just a massive step sideways at best I think. Is Collazo still with Haymon? Wonder if that makes Arum nervous at all, maybe that's just the cynic in me talking . All champs at 147 in action by April, just not with each other unfortunately.

Crawford vs. old shot Collazo is a sickening mismatch.

There are many, many better options for Crawford, including his mandatory, who happens to have the same promoter.

Spence is trying to taste real Welterweight power. Against a guy he can box a little better against without the risk. This is merely a tune-up fight.

Look at it: Horn and Benavidez posed no power threat to Crawford. Collazo does. This is merely a power-punch test against a strong, harder than usual hitting, strong chinned Welterweight.

This is all. I suspect after this Collazo fight, the end of 2019 will be VERY promising for us as Crawford fans.

PS: This also is a "warm" opening to Arum's fighters going in against Haymon's fighters without all of the high risk and drama associated.

People tend to forget, more than stage fright, but business kills more fights than injuries do. Often times these guys lie about injuries, PED's and chickening out due to the MONEY and the RESIDUALS not being in place along with the CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS.

This is a good time for Arum and Haymon to sit down over business in a low-risk kinda fight. Arum ALWAYS did business with King, because they chopped it up properly over business. Haymon can learn from King on how to work with Arum.
