Default Congratulations to Canelo and his team

Didn't see the fight..... probably won't watch it when it's available on replay either.

So congratulations to Canelo and his team for a result I and many others predicted and would've bet a hefty sum on.

Regardless of what I may think of Canelo's methodical career build-up, and the theatrical way in which he's been given every advantage that can be offered to a fighter, the fact is he got the job done inside the ring.

Didn't see the fight, so I'm not gonna pretend I can reach conclusions about Kovalev's readiness, just from the RBR accounts I've seen on the forum this morning.

All I know is that last bit about the rehydration clause added a bit more to the discontent of those of us who have never seen Canelo beat an elite fighter with no strings attached, be it catchweights, age differences, etc.

At the end of the day, he knocked out the "feared" Kovalev and now sits on the throne of boxing, which had been dusted off and prepared for Canelo since Day One.

It's not the result I wanted, but such is life and boxing. I accept that now Canelo is the "Face of Boxing", and from here on out I can envision Hollywood movies, new Mexican national holidays, and possible canonization.

So congratulations to Canelo for getting the job done. What he does from here on out is superfluous. He can go back down to 160..... he can fluctuate between 160 and 175, picking opponents at will...... whatever.

On another note, though...... I miss boxing's "olden days". Back when every fighter had to EARN his way to the top.

No silver spoons..... no pre-determined anointment..... maybe a bit less fawning over "matinee-idol" fighters by groveling networks shamelessly scrambling after ratings.

Less ridiculous shenanigans by the alphabet orgs making up belts to suit their favorite projects.... maybe a bit less outright blatant corrupt judging to favor those same anointed projects.

But I digress. The purpose of this thread is to congratulate Canelo, and we'll see what the future of boxing holds from here on out....... because I can see Canelo's model being used in the future for other "Chosen Ones."

I don't think he is the face of boxing. For a huge slice of the market maybe but not internationally. He is certainly up there and if being in the top ten makes you elite, then i suppose he is 'elite'. He is young enough, he may make it as a great by retirement and for this era it is already a very solid career. His teams tactics were spot on last night and his execution pretty flawless but he has not become a Manny, Floyd, or Duran overnight and is unlikely ever to reach those heights. He is bloody good though.

Makes you wonder why GGG never moved up for more of a challenge...we all know he wanted no part of Ward in the past.

Canelo was loosing the fight 8-2 until the 11th round..he waited for the right moment and knocked him out..he gets some praise.

(Just to remind everyone that a smaller, past prime, Floyd Mayweather was the same age as Kovalev when he easily beat Canelo)

I think it’s the 168 divison and a Caleb Plant fight coming up next for another title..

I still like BJS but I don’t think he would have been able to stop an aging Kovalev like that..

It’s now a toss up between BJS, GGG and Andrade..they can stop waiting for Canelo and just fight each other.

I give credit to Canelo, although the rehydration clause still bugs me. I considered Kovalev one of the top light-heavies going in (not the #1 guy), and Kovalev agreed to the timeframe and weight, so no excuses. It is a very good win for Canelo's record. I actually think Canelo beats Callum Smith now. As prior to this fight I may have sided the other way slightly.

I still think Callum is a problem for everyone at 168.

Eubank is going for the wba normal title next I think, his super middleweight could go vacant, alvarez golovkin for that one next and then back to 175 for Alvarez to defend against the Mexican fellow. Maybe.

Agree, I have just changed my opinion on who wins now.

Honestly, Callum Smith would perform better than Kov. There would be hard jabs, not that pitty patty punches. Smith has youth and vigour who would give Canelo a lot of problems.
