Andy Ruiz Jr will continue his return to elite boxing by taking on Luis Ortiz in California this weekend.

Ruiz Jr suffered a heavy defeat to Anthony Joshua in their world title rematch in December 2019 and then took an extended absence from the ring.

He returned last summer by claiming a unanimous decision win over Chris Arreola and is now ready for his next outing.

He’ll take on veteran Cuban Ortiz who has a record of 33 careers wins and just two losses.

Ortiz is now 43 years old but took out former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin inside six rounds in January.

This 12 round heavyweight fight is taking place on Sunday, September 4.

It is being held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

The undercard action is set to begin from midnight UK time on night with the main event to start around 4am on Monday morning for UK fans.

UK television rights have not been confirmed for the fight as of yet.

It will be shown on FOX PPV in the USA.

Andy Ruiz Jr vs Luis Ortiz
    Isaac Cruz vs Eduardo Ramirez
    Jose Valenzuela vs Jezzrel Corrales
Joseph Spencer vs Kevin Salgado Zambrano
    Ra’eese Aleem vs Mike Plania
    Abner Mares vs Miguel Flores
    Charles Martin vs Devin Vargas
Jesus Silveyra Carrillo vs Austin Dulay
Anthony Cuba vs Oscar Alan Perez
Juan Esteban Garcia vs Gilberto Mendoza
    Anthony Garnica vs TBA
    Daniel Garcia vs TBA
    Kel Spencer vs TBA

Ruiz Jr: “God-willing we get this victory on September 4.

“Of course if [Deontay] Wilder comes out of retirement I’d love to fight him, we’ve gone through the same work with Al Haymon and that would be the fight to make.

“But if not, then we can go through Usyk orAnthony Joshua.

“We can try to make that Joshua trilogy fight that I always wanted, but first I need to focus on Luis Ortiz, a hard-hitting guy.

“This might not go the distance, but I’m prepared to go all 12 rounds.

“We’re going to get this victory no matter what on September 4.”

Very Interesting fight. Both very capable, honest fighters. Depends how the years are treating Ortiz. Looking forward to it.

Andy Ruiz Jr has explained how he plans to approach his heavyweight battle with Luis Ortiz.

Ever since that famous night in June 2019 when he defeated Anthony Joshua, Andy Ruiz Jr has been one of the most talked-about heavyweight boxers on the planet. ‘The Destroyer’ has the kind of hand speed that you simply wouldn’t expect someone of his size to have, with the 32-year-old being recognised as a former world champion and the mastermind behind one of the most memorable wins the division has seen in years.

Alas, after losing the rematch six months later in fairly dull fashion, Ruiz Jr took some time away from the sport before returning to defeat Chris Arreola last May.

His route back to a world title shot was never going to be easy from there and for the longest time, rumours began to surface that he could be preparing for a showdown with ‘King Kong’ himself, Luis Ortiz.

The two are scheduled to meet in Los Angeles this weekend and ahead of the contest, Ruiz Jr noted in a media scrum that he’ll do whatever it takes to register his 35th win as a pro.

“If this ends in a knockout it ends in a knockout. My only goal is to be victorious. I’m in shape to go 12 hard rounds. We’re going to go in there and leave it all in the ring.

“I’m proof that anything is possible if you work hard and stay disciplined. The main thing right now is just accomplishing our goal Sunday night and leave the ring with my hand raised.”

Even at the age of 43, Luis Ortiz is still the kind of fighter who can strike fear into the heart of just about anyone who steps in his path.

The Cuban sensation is 33-2 and with 28 of those victories coming by way of knockout, you should have a pretty good idea of his credentials at the elite level.

The only time he’s come up on the losing end is during his two meetings with Deontay Wilder and after how good he looked against Charles Martin back in January, it’s easy to understand why some are seeing this as a really competitive fight.

Keep forgetting we don't have to wake up "on time" tomorrow. Still though not dropping 80 bucks for this microwaved pizza version of a heavyweight fight.
