'If Ruiz can knock him out, I can' - Whyte still eyeing Joshua fight

Dillian Whyte has no doubt he could knock out Anthony Joshua if he were granted a huge domestic rematch with the heavyweight champion.

Ahead of his Manchester bout with Alexander Povetkin, presently scheduled for May 2, Whyte wants to maintain his momentum and earn a shot at fellow Briton Joshua.

IBF, WBA and WBO champion Joshua is the only person to have defeated Whyte (27-1), having knocked him out in 2015.

But Whyte believes the outcome will be different in a second meeting, citing his superior skillset to Andy Ruiz Jr.

Ruiz stunningly stopped Joshua in New York last June, only to lose the December rematch in Saudi Arabia.

"If Ruiz can knock him out, I can 100 per cent knock him out, because I'm a harder puncher than Andy Ruiz, pound-for-pound," Whyte said to Sky Sports.

"I've got better feet than him as well, and better boxing technique than Andy Ruiz. He's got fast hands, but his feet are slow.

"I've shown also in fights that I can come back from being down on the scorecards and I carry knockout power in the later stages of the fight as well, which is a big thing for a heavyweight.

"A lot of heavyweights can only get you in one to six rounds. If they don't get you early, then that's a wrap for them.

"I showed you that I can get you round one, round two, round three, round four, or even round 11 and round 12, I can get you."

Eager not to get lost in the shuffle once again, Whyte is mandatory champion for the WBC, whose champion Tyson Fury is pencilled in for a third battle with Deontay Wilder and is also being targeted by Joshua.

Oleksandr Usyk is another name in the heavyweight title mix, but amid multiple lucrative opportunities, there remains one standout for Whyte if he could pick an opponent to fight for all the belts.

"I would love to fight Joshua again, at a drop of a hat,” added Whyte.

"It's one of the biggest fights out there. I'm in the game to have the biggest fights and the most meaningful fights. I'm trying to make history.

"Imagine, to get one shot at all the marbles at once, how unreal that would be after all this nonsense - out of nowhere, me and Joshua fight, I knock him out and became undisputed champion of the world."

    If you say so Dillian

Still not buying that Whyte is an improved fighter. Maybe that's me. I preferred the lunatic that got taken out by Joshua. I think that guy also beats Chisora Parker Browne and Rivas and doesn't get fat and look like turd against Wach.
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

Whyte makes 40-hour journey to Portugal for training camp ahead of Povetkin bout

Dillian Whyte has undertaken a 40-hour drive to Portugal for a training camp ahead of his heavyweight clash with Alexander Povetkin – a bout which could be postponed this week.

The Briton is slated to fight Russia’s Povetkin on May 2 in Manchester but the contest is in doubt due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn said in an Instagram Live video on Monday that a decision on the fight will be made this week.

The video also featured Hearn having a chat with Whyte, and the 31-year-old fighter said: “I’m in Portugal, (on a) training camp.

“It’s a little bit of planning. I had to drive 40 hours non-stop from my house straight to here. I drove because I brought the dogs with me, so I didn’t want to fly.

“It’s quiet but there’s food on the shelves and I have a good set-up here. It’s a good base. We thought about it, we planned and we came here and it’s good.”

Whyte added: “The mindset is my date is not cancelled, my date is still going ahead, so I’m training. I’m a professional, I’m trying to be professional and keep training, and trying to stay positive.

“It’s very important to show people in this time that it’s important to train, to get on with life the best you can in these kinds of situations, because it is easy to panic and just shut down. I’m just trying to show as much positivity as I can.”

The British Boxing Board of Control on Monday said the suspension of all events under its jurisdiction remains in place until the end of April, at which point the position will be reviewed.

“We will continue to follow Government and the medical authorities’ advice and keep the situation under review,” a statement read.

Dillian Whyte accuses Anthony Joshua of ‘pretending’ to want heavyweight rematch last year

British heavyweight boxer Dillian Whyte has accused old rival Anthony Joshua of “pretending” to want a rematch last year, but says he still wants to fight the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion.

Joshua avenged the sole defeat of his professional career in December by beating Andy Ruiz Jr to regain his heavyweight title belts, while Whyte defeated Mariusz Wach via unanimous decision earlier on the night.

In 2015, Joshua knocked out Whyte in London.

“I’ve been saying I want the rematch since the fight,” Whyte, who defeated Joshua in the amateurs before his professional loss in 2015, told Sky Sports.

“I know they were going to fight Miller in June in America, which I said months before the fight.

“They came to me and tried to kid me. You guys gave Miller 20 weeks, why are you trying to give me seven weeks? Because they wasn’t serious about the fight.

“Just using me as a scapegoat, pretending they wanted to make the fight. If he wants to fight, I’m here, he knows where I’m at. They know where my value is, I know the game inside out. If they want the fight, we can make the fight happen.”

Whyte also spoke about the challenges of training during the coronavirus lockdown ahead of his scheduled fight against Russia’s Alexander Povetkin on 2 May – a fight that is likely to be postponed amid the pandemic.

“It is very hard and very challenging, because obviously you have to take it in good spirit,” said Whyte. “I’m a big guy. Training and running and sparring takes a lot of me.

“I’ve got a new strength and conditioning programme now. We’re working on my technique, working on building my strength and other things.

“My boxing coach is working on things, getting the game plan in place. The more time I have, the better it is for me, doing a lot of new things.

“At this stage of my career, I’m still learning and improving. It’s frustrating, but it’s time for me to keep building layers, keep practising what I’ve been taught. By the time the fight comes, I’ll be flying.”

Dillian Whyte has dismissed the possibility of facing Joseph Parker or Dominic Breazeale and labelled the latter a “shameful, pathetic excuse for a heavyweight boxer”.

The WBC interim champion and mandatory challenge to Tyson Fury is scheduled to face Russian former world champion Alexander Povetkin on 4 July in Manchester.

However, Parker and Breazeale have both recently called out Whyte in hope of clinching their own chance of facing the winner of Fury and Deontay Wilder’s trilogy fight.

Whyte defeated Parker on point in 2018 but was forced to cling on after being knocked down in the 12th round.

“I’ve beat him up already, and I’ll beat him up again,” Whyte told Sky Sports. “Joseph Parker shouldn’t be struggling with guys like Shawndell Winters. Who the hell is that guy? No one has even heard of him.

“Instead of prancing around his kitchen, he should go fight someone credible like Derek Chisora or Oscar Rivas. I tried to fight Joseph Parker, before we even fought, when he was a champion. He didn’t want to fight me, but he knows that fighting me now he’ll get a big payday.

“I fight Joseph Parker again I will knock him out. I went into the fight with a broken hand and a broken rib and I still destroyed him. I didn’t outbox him, I beat him and dominated him. Imagine if I go in when I’m 100 per cent, no injury, what’s going to happen? The left hand was broken – it was the hand that I knocked him down with.

“Joseph Parker has had a lot of opportunities and he’s wasted them, simple as that. He had an opportunity to beat Anthony Joshua, he fought like a coward in the fight. He had an opportunity to beat me, he done alright, but he just talks cr**. I’m sick of these heavyweights. If you don’t really want it, don’t call my name. When I wanted it, they didn’t want to fight me.”

Breazeale, who was knocked out by Wilder in devastating fashion last year, was previously in negotiations to face Whyte but no agreement could be made.

“I accepted the fight and he pulled out of the fight, so there’s nothing more to be said on that front,” said Whyte. “These guys are time wasters. Clearly he’s bored at home and trying to shake off his last knockout, and thinking, ‘how can I get another big payday?’

“The guy is a chump. How can he have two world title fights? He didn’t even deserve one of them. That’s the reason he gets two world title fights, because he’s easy work, easy money.

“He hasn’t had a single fight since his embarrassing first-round knockout loss to that fraud Wilder, a man who humiliated him both inside and outside the ring. Shameful, pathetic excuse for a heavyweight boxer who should make a comeback and beat a few credible fighters before calling me out.”

Dillian Whyte’s camp rubbish claim that rematch with Anthony Joshua would be ‘one-sided’

Dean Whyte, the manager of British heavyweight Dillian Whyte, has rubbished recent claims by Anthony Joshua that a rematch between the pair would result in a “one-sided” victory for the reigning WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO champion.

The two heavyweights first fought in December 2015 at the O2 Arena in southeast London with both men putting their undefeated records on the line. Joshua came out on top in a memorably topsy-turvy contest, which ended in a seventh round knockout.

Joshua would go on to win the IBF title in his next fight, a second round stoppage of Charles Martin, and eventually stopped Wladimir Klitschko to pick up the WBA and IBO titles. A measured points victory over Joseph Parker saw him add the WBO title to his collection, before two fights with Andy Ruiz Jr., which saw him lose and then regain his unified titles.

Whyte meanwhile bounced back from his maiden career defeat with a knockout win over Ivica Bacurin and the Brixton-based fighter has since won all 11 of his fights, against the likes of Parker, the dangerous Óscar Rivas and Mariusz Wach.

Whyte had been due to fight two-time world title challenger Alexander Povetkin – who Joshua stopped in seven back in 2018 – only for the fight to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

That has led to speculation over who Whyte will fight next, with Joshua last week telling The Sun that he will consider rematching his old rival after he fights WBC champion and lineal king Tyson Fury. “Once I’ve beaten Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte can come and get this work as well. It won’t be that good, it will be one-sided,” he said.

But Dean Whyte has rubbished those claims.

“I personally think it’s just the confidence of him as a two-time world champion, so he’s within his rights to say that. But there is definitely no chance of an easy night with Dillian Whyte. No chance,” Whyte told CasinoLounge.co.uk.

“Joseph Parker will tell you that, Oscar Rivas will tell you that, Derek Chisora will tell you that, Lucas Browne will definitely tell you that.

“Dillian has a champion’s mindset, work ethic and toughness. You ain’t gonna get no easy night. Joshua can try and put that out into the universe to convince himself and everyone around him, but on the night we will know – and I’m sure the world will know, it won’t be an easy nights’ work.

“Coming from similar backgrounds and making themselves stars in the UK – there’s a rivalry. But there’s also a begrudging respect having shared the ring. Those guys want to fight each more than anything. Absolutely it will happen again before they both retire.”

Intriguingly, Whyte added that the delayed fight with Povetkin could move from The Manchester Arena to the United States in order for it to happen sooner.

“He might have to go abroad because the British Boxing Board might not allow it. In America, [Donald] Trump is already saying that some states are going to be open earlier than others, so potentially it may go over there,” he said.

“I know Saudi is out the question, but America is definitely a possibility. Eddie Hearn does a lot of business out there, so they may potentially look at one of the states that have not been hit very hard by the pandemic and potentially put it there. At the front of the queue is potentially the United States.”

Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin fight 'may be moved to America'

Dillian Whyte's postponed fight against Russian Alexander Povetkin may be rearranged for America, according to the heavyweight's brother, Dean Whyte.

The bout - initially scheduled for May 2 in Manchester - was first pushed back to July 4, and has now been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis.

With no current timescale for a return to boxing in Britain, Dean believes the fight location may need to be moved, touting America as a possibility with president Donald Trump aiming to reduce lockdown measures in certain states.

Whyte has not fought since a decision victory against Mariusz Wach in December 2019 on Anthony Joshua’s undercard as he avenged his loss against Andy Ruiz Jr, an event Povetkin was also involved in.

Speaking on CasinoLounge.co.uk, Dean said: "He might have to go abroad because the British Boxing Board might not allow it.

"In America, Trump is already saying that some states are going to be open earlier than others, so potentially it may go over there.

"I know Saudi is out the question, but America is definitely a possibility. Eddie Hearn does a lot of business out there, so they may potentially look at one of the states that have not been hit very hard by the pandemic and potentially put it there.

"At the front of the queue is potentially the United States."

Anthony Joshua - who defeated Whyte by knockout back in 2015 - recently stated a rematch between the pair would be entirely one-sided; a sentiment Whyte's brother certainly disagrees with.

Dean added: "I personally think it's just the confidence of him as a two-time world champion, so he's within his rights to say that. But there is definitely no chance of an easy night with Dillian Whyte. No chance.

"Joseph Parker will tell you that, Oscar Rivas will tell you that, Derek Chisora will tell you that, Lucas Browne will definitely tell you that.

Dillian Whyte posts email showing Eddie Hearn’s $4million offer to Andy Ruiz Jr as pair exchange on social media

Dillian Whyte has posted Eddie Hearn’s email offer to Andy Ruiz Jr on social media in response to a tweet from the Mexican heavyweight.

The pair were in negotiations for a fight earlier this year, but a deal could not be made and the Brit ultimately agreed his bout with Alexander Povetkin instead.

Whyte initially claimed they’d offered Ruiz Jr $5million, Ruiz Jr hit back and insisted this was not the case.

He said: “Yo, Dillian Whyte, stop clout chasing. You never offered $5m. Lies.”

The ‘Body Snatcher’ responded by posting screenshots of his text messages from Eddie Hearn, who’d forwarded him the email of the offer.

This showed that the offer was in fact $4m, however Hearn suggested they would now make a new offer increased to $5m.

Hearn said in his reply to Whyte: “We offered Ruiz $4m.

“You should go back and say, ‘Sorry I checked with Eddie, we offered you $4m. Do we have a deal at $5m and I will get it done?'”

Whyte did not take up Hearn’s suggestion post that as his reply, and instead put out the screenshot with the caption: “Fat boy Andy Ruiz Jr, stop talking s***.

“Facts are facts, stop, come on. All belly and no heart.”

Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin and Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano are set to be the first major fights in the UK to be held behind closed doors, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The heavyweight clash was originally scheduled to headline a card at the Manchester Arena on May 2 with Taylor defending her undisputed lightweight crown against Serrano on the same night.

The card was shifted to July 4 with the coronavirus pandemic halting the sporting calendar and while Hearn has suggested another push back, he is confident the show can go on without a live audience.

“A lot of people think it is difficult for bigger fights to happen behind closed doors," Hearn told The Boxing Show on Sky Sports.

"Whyte vs Povetkin is one of the fights we are planning to stage in the early part of the return, it will be take place behind closed doors.

"Dillian wasn't joking about fighting in a car park - it won't be in a car park!

I don't know how we're going to do it yet. But we have to come back with a bang. Whyte vs Povetkin, along with Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano, is a fight that I believe we will see at the end of July or early-August."

Whyte puts his WBC mandatory position on the line against Povetkin, who has recent wins over British pair David Price and Hughie Fury on his record.

Taylor vs Serrano meanwhile serves as possibly the biggest bout in the history of women’s boxing, with the undefeated Irish fighter putting four belts on the line against seven-weight champion Serrano.

"She is pound-for-pound one of the biggest superstars in the sport," Hearn said of Taylor.

"I will try to make it happen on the Whyte vs Povetkin card somehow, somewhere, some way."

Exclusive Dillian Whyte interview: 'There will be no step-aside. I’ve waited long enough'

Dillian Whyte insists no amount of money could persuade the former Brixton bad boy to "step aside" and allow Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to contest the richest fight in British boxing history.

It will have been one thousand days waiting as the No1 challenger for the World Boxing Council crown when Whyte faces the Russian Alexander Povetkin on August 22, behind closed doors in the grounds of promoter Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing headquarters in the Essex countryside. It is 15 miles from the O2 Arena where Whyte has made his name in the last two years, but more to the point, an interminable distance waiting for his moment on the fully-lit stage of success.

It is some resolve Whyte has shown, with an ambition of becoming a heavyweight world champion running deep in his blood.

But he has now become the immoveable object and the obstacle standing between the much-hyped, apparently "agreed" pair of fights between Fury and Joshua, sometime, somewhere, in 2021, and a contest that could gross an estimated £150m. Whyte, speaking from his training base in Portugal where he has been ensconced during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, where he has been tested regularly for COVID-19 and voluntary anti-doping tests, insisted: “Nah, there's to be no step-aside. I’ve waited long enough. I’m not getting any younger, I’m getting older. I just want to be world champion and reign and unify. So the sooner I can get the world title the sooner I can go about that. So, no I’m not looking to step aside at all.”

Whyte's case was strengthened on Sunday when WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that Fury's world-title fight with Whyte "could happen" this year if the American Deontay Wilder decides not to go into the trilogy fight with Fury for the WBC belt on December 19, with reports that he is recuperating from bicep surgery.

Sulaiman told Sky Sports: "It could happen if they reach an agreement. The third fight [Fury-Wilder] and then the mandatory must take place. The WBC's position and ruling is as I stated."

Even Hearn has suggested in the last week that Whyte's title fight should take place before Joshua-Fury, which will not be staged until mid-2021 at the earliest.

Whyte believes he has the right tools to defeat Fury - claiming that he had knocked him down twice in sparring several years ago - and has the know-how to unhinge Joshua. "With a full training camp I believe I’ll stop Joshua. Like was shown in the Andy Ruiz fight, if you hit him and you’re relentless, he gets stopped.”

Whyte was a contestant on Masterchef last year and revealed he even learnt something about himself on the hit television show: patience. The fighting spirit who came to the UK from Jamaica as a young teen having grown up in abject poverty, and whose only career blemish on his 28-fight career record is that defeat to Joshua five years ago, explained: “Patience can convert into all walks of life. As I become older I become more patient and concentrate more. It definitely does help."

For now, though, the only hurdle in Whyte's route to glory is a former Olympic gold medallist and two-time world title challenger, who himself has only tasted defeat against Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

"Look, everyone I’ve faced is dangerous," explained Whyte. "Povetkin is probably the most seasoned guy I’ve fought, with the most decorated pedigree out of all of them. He’s a very tough, strong man, he’s got very good punch power. We’re both front foot fighters and he’s still got a lot of ambition left.

"He knows if he beats me he gets a major pay day and a shot at another world title. I think this will probably be the best Povetkin we’ve seen. This is a major fight, no tune-up fight. And with victory, I'll be pressing for that world title.”
