Good thread!
I say Con King was Great for Boxing, bad for boxers!
To this day, he is still unsurpassed in stacking the cards.
The comparison with Dana doesn't flow with me. Dana entered during the sport's infancy, only UFC existed as a one weight fights all. 1990s. Whereas King came in 1/2 century after the legend Tex Rickard. Hard man to follow, but boy that closed circuit idea- really changed the game - I was under the impression back then Arum was more a less like an attorney- who learned it from Don, then took it and now he IMO is the definition of bad for boxing and bad for boxers. Crappy cards, mismatches, catchweights, and we will see how many of his fighters ended up broke...like many of Con King's fighters.
All's lost! Everything's going to shit!
Don King definitely leeched off many a great fighter.
On the other hand, promoters back then got the big fights MADE.
Unlike today where promoters play footsies with each other while displaying a huge middle finger at the boxing public.
dude is still kickin', spinnin' them lines, here's from March 7, 2020
Yeah, the dude can spit, when he's talkin shit.
His Knowledge is legit, though his ways are illegit.
His monetary desire proves its only himself that he seems to care,
Yet without him we wouldn't know about the rumble in Zaire.
Hearn to GoldenBoy, their promoting always down play or demeaned their foes.
But Don king gave compliments to his fighter's foes, making it so much sweeter -when he watched them hit the floor.
Only In America can a black man get pardoned for a murder, become a promoter, loathed for his treatment of his own stable...
Yet revered for his unrivaled cards, records broken proving he is still sharp, congenial and able.
Con King, there is only one.
All's lost! Everything's going to shit!
