Brilliant middleweight world title fight being finalised for September or October as Jermall Charlo and Sergiy Derevyanchenko prepare to meet.

The boxing schedule is understandbly weak at present, with the coronavirus pandemic taking its toll on the sport.

As fights are only able to be staged behind closed doors, most major names are opting to wait until later in the year before making their ring returns.

However, Jermall Charlo vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a fight which could significantly lift the mood.

According to The Athletic, America’s WBC middleweight champion and the Ukrainian two-time title challenger have agreed on all major deal points and are now finalising a match-up.

Charlo is a two-weight world champion with a record of 30-0 (22 KOs).

At super-welterweight, he proved himself as one of the division’s best by knocking out Julian Williams, but fans have been sceptical of his middleweight reign.

Charlo is yet to face top opposition at 160lbs and only picked up his WBC title by being upgraded when Canelo Alvarez was made ‘franchise’ champion.

In steps Derevyanchenko.

The 34-year-old’s unremarkable record of 13-2 (10 KOs) far from tells the full story of his career.

In his two title shots he recovered from early knockdowns, first losing on a split decision to Daniel Jacobs and then a close unanimous decision to Gennady Golovkin.

Many felt, especially in the GGG fight, that Derevyanchenko had been hard done by.

Regardless of whether he holds a belt or not, he’s proved himself as a legitimate world class middleweight and will be a tough test for Charlo.

The fight is truly a 50/50 and may end up being the best contest we see in the second half of this tumultuous year.
