    Default Hurricane Iota

    https://edition.cnn.com/2020/11/16/w...day/index.html

"Hurricane Iota strengthens to Category 5 storm as it nears Central America landfall"

    Damn...

In what is already a record-breaking year (2005 held the previous record for most active year with named storms)... now there's monster hurricane Iota bearing down on Nicaragua and Honduras... in the same path taken by a previous hurricane not long ago. Shades of the Louisiana Gulf Coast, which got battered by more than just one hurricane this season.

Gotta feel bad for these people, though. They're not in "Hurricane Alley" as we are down in Puerto Rico... so this is a relative rarity for them. Sustained winds of 160 mph and gusts of up to 190 mph. That's some scary shit right there.

I normally would've put this on the Nasty Weather thread, but thought it deserved its own.

Who's the arsehole that names a storm of historical strength at this point in a season "iota". The exact opposite sadly. This is a devil storm. I work with a girl whos family is from a tiny place called Utila around the area and it's terrifying the intensity and B line it's on, literally set to cut directly across Central America. Massive rain bands hopefully it hits with a thud and the winds die down quick. Locally we've been very active but *knocks on wood*, other than a few hours of cat 3 winds with the last one we haven't even come close to facing a thing like iota. These damn things, always brings perspective with that relatable but distanced feel when they are not one you need to watch. Can only hope it's over. You just want this season to end already.

"Two Category 4 hurricanes hit the same place in two weeks. That’s unheard of."

Man that sucks. Eta and Iota basically made landfall in the same identical place in northern Nicaragua.

But I beg to differ with the description about 2017, when Hurricane Irma and Maria came through here.

Yes... Maria plowed through Puerto Rico on Sept 20 as a Category 4... wiping out power to the entire island and killing almost 3 thousand people.

But two weeks earlier, Hurricane Irma did indeed brush the northern part of the island (I live in Luquillo... NE corner) as a Category 5.

It knocked out power to almost the entire island, and did widespread damage.

I think given this hurricane season, given this year, at this point we're out of options and we're pretty much obligated to throw Greta Thunberg into an active volcano in order to appease "the Ancient Ones"

Gotta suck for these people. I’ve been through a couple hurricanes and tornados. The tornados are amazing. One minute it’s clear, the sun is shining, the next it looks like it’s midnight, 5 to 7 minutes go by it’s clear again and you see this sometimes narrow path of destruction. One side of the road houses are missing roofs the other side looks fine. The hurricanes and those sustained winds that is scary shit. It gotta really suck for those people dealing with the virus as well. Talk about a strain on top of a strain.

    I'd use a standard like FUH#1, FUH#225 F'd up Hurricane 1 thru...
Nevertheless, hope best for those in that area.

Believe me.... having been smacked around by Hugo ('89) and Maria (2017).... I'd be willing to use that FUH scale myself.
