Default Chris Eubank Jr v Ryota Murata

Chris Eubank Jr has reportedly signed with Team Sauerland and looks set to make a fresh run at the middleweight elite.

The 31-year-old earned a career-best win over James DeGale two years ago, but has endured a frustrating period since.

He previously worked alongside Kalle Sauerland during his participation in the World Boxing Super Series tournament back in 2017/18.

Eubank Jr ultimately lost in the semi-final to George Groves, but retained a good relationship with the organisers and agreed to appear on the undercard for the final as a reserve in case either man pulled out.

Now, according to BILD, he has signed with Team Sauerland to guide his career moving forwards.

After the WBSS finished in 2018, Eubank Jr joined Al Haymon’s PBC and was hoped to be the face of their UK invasion on ITV.

This started brightly with the DeGale win in February 2019, however things did not go to plan from then onwards.

The PBC/ITV deal soon faded away and Eubank Jr instead made his US debut in December 2019 against the awkward Matt Korobov.

In round two Korobov suffered an injury and the Brit was declared the winner.

Despite telling talkSPORT.com last summer that he was hoping to fight at the end of 2020 following the pandemic disruption, this did not come to fruition for Eubank Jr.

Now it has been almost two years since his last lengthy fight and so it’s claimed he’s decided to move on with Sauerland.

The Korobov fight did give Eubank Jr one potential positive – the WBA ‘interim’ middleweight belt.

Usually these trinket titles carry little weight, but Canelo Alvarez recently vacated the WBA ‘super’ middleweight belt meaning that Japan’s Ryota Murata has been upgraded to hold the full title.

With the ‘interim’ belt, Eubank Jr could be in line to become Murata’s first mandatory challenger in 2021, though this remains to be seen.

Not sure we should believe a single word out of the WBA and their trinkets. My nephew has Lego play sets with more stability. They have Sergio Martinez..yes that one..ranked in the top 5 now .

Like to see Eubank come Stateside again. The Korobov fight was really anti climactic. Time is short for Murata but think he gives Eubank a solid challenge.

If anyone would like proof that what Ryan Garcia said is true and that anyone can become a champion if maneuvered correctly take a look at Murata’s last fight. You won’t want to watch for long, it’s very low quality pugilism.

The matchup of Eubanks vs Murata would be interesting. One a dirt slow robot and the other a fast handed guy with absolutely no technique discipline. Who’s glaring flaws are worse?
