Oh totally true! He would also gas out by the 6th or 7th. Surprised he went 15 with Muhammad Ali! He said he really had to pace himself in that fight.
I can't believe his trainers didn't work on the most important thing on a fighter's training regimen.
I tend to view it as compensation. A trainer can only improve a fighter so much. I think of how Holyfield described a few wins against opponents he stated- sometimes when throwing those hard shots, a fighter forgets to breathe.
I get that- who throws while inhaling or exhaling? If Shavers was throwing his all into those shots, I would expect for his ring time of 36 minutes to be cut by 18 minutes LOL!
Mix those shots up with lighter shots, but maybe they tried that as well?
I agree with your suggestion. It's just like I wondered why didn't Dundee work on Ali going to the body? Of course everyone's gonna go 15 rounds with him! But I digress.
Valid point on his stamina. I just speculate he could've gone 15 rounds without fatiguing if he wasn't throwing bombs each time he threw a punch.
Plus! He wasn't exactly ring savvy. no great boxing IQ, probably was as bad as developing stamina as Wilder is developing just the friggin' basics.
*edit* So they both depended on one thing: their power.
