Vargas was not answering back with anything. He was out of it and the ref saved him from a brutal knockout.
I disagree, knowing how Vargas fights. A standing count would have been more fair. Vargas was taking shots. But he wasn't going down.

If he did go down. Then that would be a fair decision from the ref.

What ever happened to the knockdown rules? nowadays just smother your opponent with good punches and you can win!

Agreed, the fight was over, the ref was 3 punches away from being told he was irresponsible, that’s boxing.
    You say tomato,
    ‘n I say …… it correctly.

Imagine you had just beat up the biggest guy in school... that was kinda what he was faced with.

Are we actually annoyed at someone running their mouth about a win?

Let him run his mouth, he was supposed to be tested tonight, in a hard 12 rounder.

I for one, who’d thought he would lose am happy with the shit talk.
    Agree.

Adrenaline is high and he can say what he wants.

The fight was devastating and accurate.

He has vastly improved but he should chase after the European title first.

Khan is obviously a big money fight but Khan has earned the right to choose a damaged Brook as the last fight of his career.

It should have been a standing count but with being so early in the round the referee used his discretion and ended the fight.

There were no complaints from Vargas which is the most important thing.

Vargas was bashed up properly but I'd have liked to have seen a second chance and Conor putting him to sleep.
Said in first post Benn is massively improved, fast as fuck and every punch is landing.
You stick dedication and boxing fundamental skills into a mini Nigel Benn then you get a dangerous little fighter.
Really starting to think he can crack on and have a real go at a world title.
Amir Khan won't go anywhere near him 😉
It's seriously starting to impress me is Conor Benn 😎

I’ve went from not being that bothered about seeing any of his fights, to now wanting to watch every single fight he has next!

Strange how I sort of expected Josh Kelly to be the one leading the way..

Massive improvement from Benn. I don’t think Khan would go anywhere near him.

No doubt a great win and a step up. But not a massive one. He’s beaten a guy who has lost to a lot of names. Now he has to beat someone who has actually beaten some big names.
The only chance of Khan fighting him would be a massive amount of money.
Ad let’s be fair , he wouldn’t get in with Brook when there would’ve been way more on offer, so no chance really.

Avanesyan is who I wanna see him fight next, not Khan/Brook
Let's see him in with the guy who smashd up Josh Kelly.
Puts a bit of doubt in my mind hearing him call out Khan, if you think your that good then call out the live fighter on your way up the ladder 😉
Brook would be a better test than Khan.
If he banged out Avanesyan THEN we can start to really take him as a force.

You don't stop the fight (especially not in the first round) when they have their guard up and on their feet

Vargas was hurt, but not badly, he was just taken back a bit by the speed of the shots.

Vargas gets rocked every fight but he recovers as well as anybody. He has incredibly recuperative abilities.

Ref could have said "Show me something or I will stop the fight" and that's my main issue there was no attempt from the referee to actually evaluate whether or not the fighter is capable of continuing to fight.

Tyson Fury got a sobriety test in the US in the last round of a fight after getting knocked down hard and in the UK the fights get stopped in the first round if your head is snapped back while you're against the ropes.

Josh Warrington nearly got beaten to death and it wasn't stopped, you can understand why boxers outside of the UK talk about "UK Stoppages"

It was a bit of Vargas's fault too. He should have took a knee but when the ref jumped in he looked more than capable of continuing to fight.

But at the end I notice how Benn didn't call out any top upcoming contender like Vergil Ortiz or a beast like David Avaneysean. He don't want that kinda smoke. He called out Amir Khan, Kell Brook and Adrien Broner. Cody Crawley could be a good matchup or if he really want to a risk it then a slick Ray Robinson or Custio Clayton could be good too.

I suppose he is still working his way up. I don't think he is ready for any of the top Level guys in that loaded division. I would not give him Shawn Porter either even though Porter is more civilized now doing his TV work I still think it would still be a major step up. Ever since Benn was dropped by that french street sweeper, all his opponents have KO % below 42% and Porter can crack and fight hard for the full 12 but having said that I rate Benn as the best prospect in the UK

A standing count is not permitted in the rules.

There is hardly a body in professional boxing that does have it in the rules (although some do). None of the WBA, WBO, IBF, or WBC have standing 8 counts. It's mostly an amateur thing.

Sometimes (panicking) refs incorrectly give a standing 8 count and that seems to confuse people.

Sometimes fans also think that when a fighter rises from being dropped and the ref continues to count to 8, that's a 'standing 8' count, but obviously it isn't.

Compassionate ref I guess, the way Vargas head was snapping back tells you that he was getting banged out if it continued much longer.

It was a matchroom stoppage. I've seen too many of them type stoppages in the UK. Vargas was hurt, but he was clearly able to continue and it was obvious immediately after the ref stopped the fight.

Ive seen some shit stoppages in my time (in britain and america)

this one wasnt that shit tho, vargas' head was rolling around, noone can actually say for sure that a couple more shots wouldnt have knocked him cold and benn was hitting the target with every punch

having said that tho, these are boxers and people watch to see people getting sparked, a first round sparking probably wouldnt have been that bad for his health

It was the first round and that’s what makes people think he could’ve recovered , hence the stoppage being early.
But Vargas didn’t help his cause. His head snapped back a couple of times, which sometimes looks worse than it is . And the reason it was stopped was just because Vargas wasn’t throwing anything back.
He could’ve painted a better picture for the ref.
