Default Oscar Valdez vs Robson Conceicao

Tony Bellew has blasted the US commissioners who have ruled that Oscar Valdez vs Robson Conceicao can proceed as planned this weekend.

It was revealed last week that the WBC super-featherweight champion tested positive for phentermine – a central-nervous stimulant.

His team have insisted that the Mexican did not knowingly ingest the substance ahead of his defence against Robson Conceicao on September 10 and claim to believe it came from “an herbal tea”.

Phentermine is on the VADA banned list, but VADA merely collect the samples and report test results. They do not enforce rulings, this is the job of the various boxing commissions.

Some commissions adhere to the VADA banned list when ruling on such matters, but others follow the WADA code.

Under the WADA code, phentermine is only banned ‘in competition’ – and the ‘in competition’ period only begins on fight day itself.

As such, the local commission in this instance have cleared Valdez to fight regardless of the positive test.

Bellew told iFL TV: “It’s a f***ing disgrace that the fight’s going ahead. And what the f***’s gonna go on if that boy gets hurt?

“Someone tell me – if Robson Conceicao gets hurt, people are going to jail, they’ve gotta go to jail. Do not let this fight happen.

“That athletic commission, I can’t even pronounce the name of it, they’ve approved this fight when a man has had an A and a B sample come in, and they’re both reading the same thing…

“It’s insane. If Robson Conceicao gets hurt in that fight, that could be the end of boxing.

“That’s how bad it is, boxing could be forced underground.”

GUIDANCE Oscar Valdez reveals what Canelo Alvarez told him after hearing he tested positive for phentermine

Oscar Valdez has revealed that Canelo Alvarez reassured him ‘everything’s gonna be alright’ after his positive drugs test was revealed last week.

The WBC super-featherweight champion tested positive for phentermine – a central-nervous stimulant.

His team have insisted that the Mexican did not knowingly ingest the substance ahead of his defence against Robson Conceicao on September 10 and claim to believe it came from “an herbal tea”.

Phentermine is on the VADA banned list, but VADA merely collect the samples and report test results. They do not enforce rulings – this is the job of the various boxing commissions.

Some US commissions adhere to the VADA banned list when ruling on such matters, but others follow the WADA code.

Under the WADA code, phentermine is only banned ‘in competition’ – and the ‘in competition’ period only begins on fight day itself.

As such, the local commission in this instance have cleared Valdez to fight regardless of the positive test.

Valdez achieved a career-best win back in February as he knocked out long-reigning champion Miguel Berchelt to become a two-weight king.

Now, some boxers across the sport are not only raising questions about him, but his camp, too.

Valdez is part of Reynoso’s ‘Canelo Team’ – widely considered one of the greatest stables in boxing today.

Reynoso is thought to be the frontrunner for Trainer of the Year in 2021 having not only guided Valdez to a stunning win, but also trained Ryan Garcia, Andy Ruiz Jr and boxing’s pound-for-pound king Canelo himself.

Back in 2018, Canelo received a six-month ban after testing positive for clenbuterol and had to postpone his rematch with Gennady Golovkin as a result.

He always insisted this test result was due to contaminated meat in Mexico.

A year later, WADA recognised the issue in Mexico and so raised the allowable threshold.

The WBC subsequently put out a statement insisting that this was “confirmation of the innocence” of Canelo.

Regardless, in some quarters the damage was already done in terms of the reputation of Reynoso’s gym.

Now, two years later, the situation with Valdez has reignited such talk and he has revealed that Canelo even gave him words of comfort on the day he was told he tested positive.

Valdez told ESPN: “We didn’t talk much, just that same day, everybody saw my face when they told me I came back positive.

    “Everybody felt that you know.

“And I immediately, we immediately stopped training and everybody saw my disappointment. I was in shock.

“He just walks up to me and tells me, ‘Everything’s gonna be alright, the truth is gonna come out. You know, don’t worry. We all know the way you work, the way you train, we all know that you’re a clean fighter.'”

Regarding the perception of his camp, Valdez added: “It’s unfair for everybody. For everybody in the gym.

“It’s very unfair for someone like Andy Ruiz. Very unfair for somebody like Ryan Garcia.

“My name will never be 100 per cent clear because a lot of people out there will always use that against me.

“Maybe because they don’t like me or maybe because they truly do believe that I’m trying to cheat. Or whatever the reasons are.

“They’re always gonna say, ‘Yeah, he cheated.'”

Oscar Valdez denies cheating and offers theory for "humiliating" positive drugs test

Oscar Valdez has claimed that herbal tea may be the reason that he tested positive for a banned substance ahead of his fight this weekend.

The super featherweight champion tested positive for the banned substance phentermine during a pre-fight test administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) ahead of his bout with Robson Conceicao this weekend.

But despite the positive test, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe Athletic Commission who are sanctioning the bout at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, will allow the world title fight to continue.

And Valdez has claimed that the drug, which is not banned out-of-competition, may have entered his system through, bizarrely, his change in beverage choice.

"We've literally never done anything different as far as taking other supplements," Valdez told ESPN.

"You know, very simple supplements -- vitamin C, vitamin B12 and all those normal vitamins that everybody should take.

"The only difference is that I've taken herbal tea. That's the reason why I would think that could possibly be, but I'm still not 100 per cent how that got into my body.

"I gave up coffee a while back and I started taking more herbal teas.

"And just trying different types of teas was the only difference that I've done in this training camp, and that's one of the reasons why I think that's possibly it."

The unbeaten fighter has claimed that he has never knowingly induced any substances, and believes the herbal teas, which he stopped drinking last month to make sure that he was not taking in any substance.

"What I can say is that I'm a 100% clean fighter," he explained. I don't know how that got into my body.

"I know every fighter is responsible for whatever they consume, but on behalf of myself, I have no clear answer on how that got into my body.

"I've always considered myself, and I will always be a clean fighter.

"So, I don't know how that got into my body."

And he has implored Conceicao to fight him, saying that the substance won't impact his performance in the fight.

Phentermine is generally used for weight loss, and requires a prescription for use, which Valdez has promised that he hasn't had ahead of the fight.

"If I was him I would 100% fight me," he continued.

"Because this is a chance to win a world title, and if I'm being more honest, I would think, 'What is he taking? Oh, he's taking this substance to lose weight?

"'Oh, well that's a pretty dumb move because he's losing weight way too early from the fight. So it means he might be drained or overtraining, I don't know.'"

Phentermine is an amphetamine and a DEA controlled substance, and the bout will still take place on Friday night as initially planned, with Junto Nakatani facing Angek Acosta for the world flyweight title on the undercard.

Had Valdez one of my top 5 favs not to long ago but this isn't good and can't be normalized or winked away on a technicality. The thing today is to say "well they all do it now" but rules is rules. Fighter should be penalized and put on the bench, and keep track of the company you keep Oscar . Won't lie though probably end up watching the fight

Timothy Bradley recently said that he hopes Oscar Valdez gets knocked out in light of the news he tested positive for a banned substance yet will be allowed to fight Robson Conceicao on Friday in Tucson, Arizona. I won’t go that far but I know where he’s coming from.

And I have similar feelings toward the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Athletic Commission and the World Boxing Council, which are overseeing the card at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Ariz.

Valdez last week tested positive – both his “A” and “B” samples – for the weight-loss medication phentermine, which is also a stimulant. The drug is banned by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, the organization Valdez asked to do his testing.

The appropriate course of action after a blatant violation of the rules? Valdez is removed from the card, stripped of his title and suspended by the WBC, whose junior lightweight belt Valdez owns.

The Commission and sanctioning body had different ideas, which resulted in no punishment.

The former announced that it adheres to the rules of the World Anti-Doping Agency, not that of the more-stringent VADA. WADA bans phentermine only during its in-competition period, beginning at 11:59 a.m. the day before the scheduled event.

The fact the commission is on a different page from the sanctioning body and the fighters themselves is odd to say the least.

Meanwhile, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said that Valdez would have no advantage over Conceicao because phentermine isn’t a performance-enhancing drug, a contention that BALCO founder and noted PED expert Victor Conte believes is hogwash.

“You know why it’s a performance-enhancing drug? Because it’s a central nervous stimulant,” he told ESPN. “It accelerates your heart rate. It gives you energy. It gives you endurance. It gives you stamina. It makes it easier to breathe. Your training time to exhaustion would be much longer.”

    No advantage? Yeah, right.

Even you believe that Conte is wrong, the fact is Valdez tested positive for a drug that was on VADA’s list of banned substances. It’s an obvious violation. And, again, everyone (except the commission) agreed to work with VADA, which partners with Sulaiman in his WBC Clean Boxing Program. You can’t change the rules midstream to suit your needs, at least not without taking a major hit to your reputation.

Of course, Valdez denied knowingly ingesting the drug. Ignore that. They all play ignorant.

The fact is he’s a drug cheat who shouldn’t be allowed to step through the ropes on Friday night. And both the commission and WBC decided to ignore that fact. In doing so, they failed to fulfil their responsibilities. I can’t provide a reason for their behavior with 100% certainty but you can bet it had something to do with the bottom line. It always does.

As a result, the commission looks horrible. The WBC, already sketchy by its very nature, looks horrible. Everyone associated with the event – except VADA, which did its job – looks horrible. And, sadly, the bleeding doesn’t stop there.

The sport is perpetually under fire as it is, for bad scorecards, deaths in the ring and much more. The last thing it needs are poor decisions that cast doubt (further doubt?) on its ability to prevent doping.

Make no mistake: That’s exactly what the Commission and WBC have done.
