Chris Eubank Jr: Billy Joe Saunders knows the fans want the rematch

Chris Eubank Jr wants to face Liam Williams or Billy Joe Saunders after he made a triumphant return to the ring last weekend.

The 32-year-old has endured heartbreak away from the ring after the tragic death of his brother Sebastian, and the former IBO super-middleweight champion produced a solid performance to defeat Wanik Awdijan on Saturday night.

Eubank Jr, who has previously shared the ring with Saunders, stopped the little-known Awdijan in the fifth round after the short-notice replacement retired with a broken rib.

And now he is prepared to give the people what they want - namely, a rematch with Saunders.

Speaking after the fight, he said: “Anybody with a world title, anything the fans want to see me fight…

“A guy that keeps popping up is Liam Williams. Everyone seems to want that fight for me, so that’s an option. You’ve got that rat [Billy Joe] Saunders running around. He wants to fight me for five mil [£5million]."

A fight against Saunders, who lost his WBO super-middleweight crown to Canelo Alvarez earlier this year, seems likely but it remains to be seen if both parties will be able to reach an agreement.

Eubank, 32, wants to fight again in 'December' and added: “The options are endless. All I know, from December, big names, it’s gonna [sic] be a hell of a 12 months.”

Sky Sports pundit Carl Froch said Eubank needs a 'big name' fight and urged his former sparring partner to 'get a move on' with his career after a period of stagnation.

"The Liam Williams fight is a good fight, but he definitely, 100 per cent needs to now get a move on," Froch told Sky Sports.

"We need to see him in there with a big name, or a bigger name. Maybe the Billy Joe Saunders rematch. I quite like that fight.

"When people start pricing themselves out of the fight, that's when you realise that maybe they don't want the fight.

"We need to see Chris Eubank Jr in with a big name and we need to see a performance, because the time is nigh, it really is."

Eubank (31-2, 23 KOs) has won five of his past six contests, highlighted by a second-round knockout of Matt Korobov and a super-middleweight title victory over James DeGale.

Johnny Nelson added: "That's probably wound Billy Joe up, saying he doesn't want the fight, but you never know, it stirs the pot.

"Either Liam Williams or Billy Joe, they are fan fights. They are fights that the fans can really get excited about.

"Then of course, he's got to make sure he nails down a world title fight, whoever the champion is, within the next 12 months."

Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Williams to settle differences in Cardiff in December with Welshman calling it the biggest all-British fight outside of Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury

Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Williams are finally going to settle their bitter rivalry when they clash on the latter’s home turf in Cardiff at the Motorpoint Arena.

The fight takes place on December 11 and a chance to fight for a world title could lie in wait for the victor.

The 32-year-old Eubank Jr, who has been working with Roy Jones Jr since the pandemic begun, says this fight isn’t just business for him, it’s personal.

“Liam Williams has been saying a lot to try to catch my attention and bait me into fighting him,” he said.

“It’s now got to the point where everyone is asking me to shut him up, and on December 11, I’m going to give the people what they want.

“As I’ve said, I’m only involved in big fights from now on and this is the fight people want to see. They want to see if Williams can back up what he’s been saying – which he won’t. I’m on a mission towards World Titles and Liam Williams is someone I’ve got to go through to get there. I’m looking forward to shutting him up.”

Eubank Jr, son of the legendary Chris Eubank, has a 31-2 record with his only losses coming against former world champions George Groves and Billy Joe Saunders.

Williams is 27-3 and came up short against Demetrius Andrade for the WBO middleweight title in April. Prior to that, only a pair of losses to Liam Smith in 2017 stained his record.

The Welshman believes he can knock the ‘arrogant’ Eubank Jr down a peg or two.

“I’m very excited to get the fight made. It’s been coming for a long time. I can’t wait to shut his mouth once and for all.

“There’s nothing like a big domestic showdown to get the juices flowing. A lot of people have been calling for this fight for a long time. I personally think it’s the biggest all-British fight outside of [Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury].

“I’m really excited and just counting down the days. I’ve not been that impressed with Chris’ recent performances. People are talking about how he’s brought Roy Jones in to improve him but if I’m being totally honest I don’t think he’s improved one bit. A win in this fight and possibly even a stoppage over Eubank and my name is going to be well and truly out there and in the mix for world titles.”

Unfortunately I reckon Williams is too small for Eubank.
Former Undisputed 4 belt Prediction champion. Still P4P and People’s Champion.

I like Williams but agree he will be too small for Eubank. After this fight Eubank must take on a top world class middleweight.

Fans thought that Chris Eubank Jr against Liam Williams was cancelled - but a new date has been pencilled in for this eagerly anticipated fight.

The bout was originally supposed to take place on Saturday 11th December, but a shoulder injury that the Welshman picked up during meant that the boxing encounter had to be put back while he recovered.

BOXXER is the new promotion associated with Sky Sports that will be flying the flag for this event in what has been a heated build-up between the two fighters.

Eubank Jr, the son of British boxing icon Chris Eubank, has said that his feud with Williams has become "personal" and that he shows no respect towards the man otherwise known as "The Machine," who recently lost his WBO middleweight title fight against Demetrius Andrade by unanimous decision.

The London-born fighter is a former world champion at super-middleweight and has aspirations to become a two-time title holder, with Williams being part of his boxing journey.

With this in mind, fans will be eager to find out when the man signing microwaves with the take on the dynamo from Wales.

After the fight was hit with an unexpected setback, the fight between Eubank and Williams has been rescheduled for Saturday 29th January and will take place at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales.

Many thought that the fight would be cancelled altogether due to fears that Williams may need surgery on his shoulder - which proved not to be the case.

Quoted by Sky Sports, the Founder and CEO of BOXXER Ben Shalom spoke about the fight itself and Williams' injury.

    He said:

"We were absolutely gutted to hear of Liam's injury and so we are equally delighted to get this fight back on, in a matter of weeks, to ensure Liam's 100 per cent fitness. The bitterness and mind-games towards each other has only intensified during this period, and by the time they get into the ring it will be at boiling point. I'm glad the fans will get the chance to see the fight that they desperately wanted.

    Shalom continued:

"This was going to be the biggest domestic fight of 2021. Now it's going to be the biggest domestic fight of 2022 and it's starting the Sky Sports Boxing new year with a bang. It's a great card from top to bottom and we can't wait to feel the atmosphere in the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff on fight night. It's going to be electric."

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) has written to Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford to clarify whether Chris Eubank Jr's middleweight fight with Liam Williams can go ahead.

Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena is set to stage the bout on Saturday, 5 February.

In a letter seen by BBC Sport Wales, the BBBofC say it will not be viable to hold the event in Wales without fans.

Current restrictions in Wales mean the fight would need to be staged behind closed doors.

Ministers will look at easing Wales' Covid rules when restrictions are reviewed next week, Mr Drakeford has said.

But he said it was a "big if" whether the situation would allow any change to be made.

Wales' main sporting events will be held without spectators this weekend.

That is in line with government policy in Wales, with large outdoor meetings prohibited since Boxing Day in the fight against Covid-19.

It appears highly likely sporting events in Wales on the weekend of 22-23 January will also be played behind closed doors.

Swansea City have moved their Championship game with Preston on Saturday, 22 January to a 12:30 GMT kick-off to allow fans to stream the match.

There are currently strict limits on the number of people allowed to meet indoors in Wales, a huge issue for staging boxing, with two-metre social distancing rules applying in public places.

In Wales nightclubs are currently closed, with limits on hospitality businesses, sporting events and who people can meet indoors and outdoors.

Eubank Jr's middleweight fight with Williams has already been postponed twice, most recently after the BBBofC suspended boxing for the month of January.

It was originally scheduled for 11 December, but was put back to 29 January after Williams suffered a shoulder injury.

In a letter sent to Mr Drakeford, BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith says the event would be important for Welsh boxing, but warns that a venue in England will be sought as a replacement unless clarity is offered on whether a full crowd can attend.

"Throughout the pandemic we have kept regulations under regular review, with our approach being informed by the latest available scientific and medical advice," a Welsh government spokesperson said in response.

"The cabinet is reviewing the situation on a weekly basis."

Williams and Eubank Jr, 32, have a bitter rivalry and a win for either man will boost their chances of securing a world title shot in 2022.

The fight moving away from Cardiff would be a blow to Wales' Williams, 29, who has rarely enjoyed home advantage in the biggest bouts of his career.

It remains possible the fight could be postponed for a third time, allowing sufficient time to sell tickets if restrictions in Wales are relaxed.

The fight with Eubank Jr will be the first for Williams under new trainer Adam Booth, following his decision to split with Dominic Ingle.
