Default Shakur Stevenson v Oscar Valdez

Shakur Stevenson versus Oscar Valdez would be 'a corker' of a fight, according to Bob Arum.

Top Rank CEO Arum reportedly wants to pit the two against one another in April in Las Vegas - which coincides with ESPN's plans to broadcast the annual NFL draft in Sin City.

Canelo Alvarez's teammate Valdez - who in 2021 knocked out Miguel Berchelt after ten rounds in what was considered a major upset at the time - recently courted controversy after testing positive for the banned substance phentermine ahead of his fight against Robson Conceicao.

Meanwhile, Stevenson, 24, is widely seen as the second coming of Floyd Mayweather. In five years as a professional, Stevenson has amassed an impressive unblemished record, with nine of his 17 victories coming by knockout.

Promoter Arum confirmed to World Boxing News WBO super-featherweight champion Stevenson will face WBC titleholder Valdez to unify their belts in their first fight of 2022, with the winner then expected to face featherweight champ Emanuel Navarrete.

He said: “Shakur, I think the fight for him is against Valdez and that would be a corker and I’d love to get that fight done.

“That’s what we’re looking to do, yeah. I think before the end of April.

“Other people in the company are doing the negotiations and I don’t think there will be any roadblocks.”

Stevenson, who spent the weekend partying with Jake Paul, tops the Ring Magazine's latest super-featherweight rankings, after his masterful performance against Jamel Herring.

The Olympic silver medallist put in a dominant display against the former US Marine three months ago at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

After an initial feeling-out process, the American started to turn up the heat as he repeatedly beat Herring to the punch and captured the belt in the process.

Speaking after the fight, he said: "There's only one fight left, the biggest fight in the division.

"Oscar can't keep ducking! It's time to fight!

"Me versus Oscar, there is nothing else to look forward to.

"The 130lbs division needs to unify, so let's get it.

"I want to be a superstar in the sport.

"I take my craft seriously, I am disciplined, I had a strong camp.

"I want to thank Tim Bradley who criticised me and called me boring.

"So I wanted to perform in a fun fight - to show my skills, my defence, my power. I showed everything.

"Around the fifth round, I had landed everything and was winning clearly. Then he tried to come on. I thought: 'I will take a break then step it up later.'"

Default Oscar Valdez vs Shakur Stevenson - 30/4/22

Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson will be colliding on Saturday 30th April 2022.

The Junior Lightweight Title unification match is being brought to boxing fans by Top Rank, and it looks set to be a barnburner from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With this being a unification bout, both the WBO and WBC titles will be on the line, with the winner set to be crowned the undisputed Junior Lightweight Champion of the world.

Here’s everything you need to know about the current betting odds for the Junior Lightweight Title unification fight between Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson.

The two fighters had their first face-to-face on Wednesday 9th March 2022 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas alongside Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

Top Rank sent out the following press release regarding the contest and the first face-to-face for the two men:

“Less than eight weeks from fight night, the two went face to face Wednesday morning at MGM Grand. Tensions did not spill over, but the two undefeated champions exchanged not-so-pleasant pleasantries. Valdez (30-0, 23 KOs), the two-weight champion from Nogales, Mexico, enters as the betting underdog for only the second time in his career.

“The first time, Valdez knocked out Miguel Berchelt in devastating fashion. Stevenson (17-0, 9 KOs), in his fifth bout at junior lightweight, hopes a victory will vault him up the mythical pound-for-pound rankings.

Credit where credits due on Top rank putting them both up. Do think if Shakur develops a mean streak and asserts off of athletic southpaw advantages, he could do a number on a few guys and favor over Valdez. The lumps and welts on his mug will be aplenty. But this isn't Jamel Herring and he's not faced anything close to the compact power and depth of a Valdez. Looking forward to this big time.

Undercard consists of one Nico Ali Walsh and awesome lightweight prospect 4-0 Keyshawn Davis vs 18-0 Esteban Sanchez in 'special' attraction showcases.

About time we have fights on "regular" espn. Let's just hope it's not delayed by College Softball or semi-pro Badminton.

Agree- Valdez is a step up and provides real risk. I always feel like you can tell the real ones by how aggressively they are matched up at esrly points in their careers- I just have this feeling that Shakur is the real deal and will go far. Hats off to Top Rank and both guys for making this fight happen right now.

I am always a little hesitant to proclaim a young guy as the next big/sure thing, but I just feel like Stevenson has all the physical gifts plus the intangibles. Valdez will push him and make him a better fighter- as long as he passes the test. For every Oscar, Floyd, Roy…etc., there is a Howard Davis, Francisco Bojado, and Ricardo Williams. I’m excited for this fight and like both guys.
