Default Mikey Garcia Quietly Announces His Retirement From Boxing

Former four-weight world champ Mikey Garcia has seemingly announced his retirement from the sport, and he has done it in a very low-key, quiet manner. As the folks at RingTV.com have reported, Garcia updated his Instagram account, with the description now reading “retired world champ” in the featherweight, junior lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight divisions.

Meanwhile, a source at Matchroom Boxing, who had promoted Garcia in what will now go down as his final fights, says the retirement announcement seems to be official.

So 34 year old Garcia exits with a fine 40-2(30) record and he did indeed rule the world at four weights.

Is Mikey a future Hall of Famer? Did Garcia do enough?

Garcia of Oxnard, California went pro in July of 2006 and he went on to defeat some fine fighters, including – Orlando Salido, Juan Manuel Lopez, Roman Martinez, Juan Carlos Burgos, Elio Rojas, Dejan Zlaticanin, Adrien Broner, Robert Easter, and, in his final win, Jessie Vargas.

Garcia, who was beaten only by the much bigger Errol Spence Jr, and, in a huge upset, Sandor Martin, this in October of last year, was never once stopped. Winning belts is of course a whole lot easier here in the modern era, simply because there are more belts out there to win. Still, Garcia’s achievement of winning major belts at four weights – this something only a handful of fighters have managed to do – should not be demeaned. Garcia consistently fought the best and in the Spence fight, when Mikey went for a fifth world title in as many weights, he dared to be great, as the saying goes.

Garcia was a smart fighter, with a big fan following. Garcia gave us some thrills along the way but he was a notably patient, thinking fighter. Garcia has now retired and he has gone out on his own terms. It will be interesting to see what Mikey does now. Maybe he would make a fine trainer?

We wish Garcia nothing but the best with his retirement.

It was a shame he couldn’t get the Loma fight no matter how hard he tried. Arum sucks standing in the way of so many great fights.

Think we saw the writing on the wall and where his intentions were once he jumped divisions for a fight anyone thinking clear could see he wasn't going to win. Outstanding talent nonetheless but for me goes down as a 'woulda-coulda-shoulda' type after he came back. Wish him nothing but luck.

He definitely did things his own way. Wasn't it about two years of his career he sat out at one point? Definitely badly advised along the way. I don't think he'll get involved with training even with the obvious family connections. I don't think he loves boxing anymore.

Mikey Garcia was beautiful to watch boxing. Technically perfect.

I have not seen a naturally talented, gifted, up and coming boxer like him since Fernando Vargas.

Great boxer and a classy guy. He retired the same way he conducted his career and his business while fighting. Quietly.

Mikey Garcia was extremely successful as a professional boxer and that success has continued into retirement.

As a four-weight world champion and having boxed some huge names at the most iconic venues in the world, Garcia had a career of which most fighters could only dream.

But, in a sport were big money can be earned quickly and spent just as fast, Garcia was smart with his cash even as a young man. He was so clever, it has now left him in a position where he is worth $20million.

The man from California revealed this on the SnewJ Knows YouTube channel, as he also gave a tour around his 12-acre ranch that is worth $4m and has its own go-kart track.

The house has a games room with arcade machines, a pool table, a football table and his master bedroom has a pool attached to it.

Garcia also has an extensive car collection, with 16 cars in total and they are worth around $4m altogether.

This includes a Lamborghini Aventador SV, one of 600 produced, worth $500k, as well as a $250k custom stretched Range Rover, a Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe worth $400k and a $400k Bentley Speed, among many others.

And Garcia has been able to afford all these cars due to his investments in property.

At just 21 years old, he bought his first home and by the time he became a world champion at 25 he had four properties.

Nowadays, he brings in just under a million dollars a year through his real estate investments, as well as the fact he put $1.25m into stocks, which has since doubled.

"My main career was always boxing and that gave me the opportunity to venture out and do a few other things," Garcia explained.

"Before I even became world champion I started to look at how life would look after boxing, because I wanted to prepare.

"So, I prepared by getting into the real estate game, properties, flipping a few here and there.

"Once I started getting closer to retiring from boxing, I paid more attention to real estate, getting more involved and it allowed me to continue a good career outside of boxing."

With that being said, none of this would have been possible had it not been for his lucrative career inside the ring.

Garcia revealed that for his 2019 clash with Errol Spence Jr and his subsequent fight a year later against Jessie Vargas, he earned around $20m combined from those fights alone.

When he hung up his gloves, he had a record of 42-2 from a career in which he held titles at featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight.
