Default Liam Smith v Chris Eubank Jr

Liam Smith fancies having a scrap with Chris Eubank Jr – before he starts hunting for a world title.

The 33-year-old stopped Jessie Vargas in the 10th round of a scintillating bout on the undercard of Katie Taylor‘s historic clash with Amanda Serrano on 30 April at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Smith, who is one of four boxing brothers, has signed to fight on Sky Sports with promotional stable BOXXER.

That means that he could be given the chance to fight Eubank Jr, which he says he would not hesitate to accept straight away if it were offered to him at this moment in time.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I’ve always put my name in for that.

“That’s a fight that I’d jump at tomorrow. That’s a fight that I’d love, that’s a fight that I know could be made now. With me back on Sky that’s one that they’ll probably push to make.

“If Chris Eubank fights me the way he fought Liam Williams, I think I’d beat him handily.

“I think he’s stuck in styles, trying to fight the way Roy Jones fights. So that’s one that I’d bite your hand off for and I’d bite your hand off for it next, if you want the truth.

“We had some good spars and you can’t really take too much off a spar, sparring in general. But them spars, we done a lot, have also made me massively confident I’d beat Chris Eubank.

“If he comes for a fight, you’re in for a fight with him; he’s a good athlete, fit. He’s not strong but he’s fit.

“Boxing ability and boxing IQ I don’t think he’s the greatest. That’s why I think he’s stuck in between styles at the moment. I think Roy Jones is trying to get him boxing and if he tries to box me like he boxed Liam Williams, then I think it’s an easy night for me.”

As well as Eubank Jr, Smith also fancies a crack at Jermell Charlo and Tim Tszyu.

He added: “It’s exciting the position I’m in at the moment.

“If all four belts become vacant, I’ll probably get a choice of route.

“The British fans know me. Put a fight in front of me, I’ll take it and I’ve done that the whole way through my career, whether it be Russia, whether it be drop back down a level for a domestic fight with Anthony Fowler.

“Offer me a fight, I’ll take it. I like a fight.”

PPV? This is becoming like the USA. This fight is a domestic at best.

Obviously I’ve been banging on about that for ages. What I will say however, is that this is way more worthy of PPV than Eubank/Conor Benn was.
Liam Smith in his defence has at least been a World Champion and has shared the ring with some top class opponents .
Former Undisputed 4 belt Prediction champion. Still P4P and People’s Champion.

True but it was a minor world title at the weight below. When he did meet a top-class fighter he was stopped.

    Eubank was also outclassed.

I do not know why Sky can justify ppv when Yarde v Beterbiev is not.

Chris Eubank Jr will fight Liam Smith in an all-British middleweight contest at Manchester Arena on 21 January.

Eubank Jr had been set to fight Conor Benn last month, but that bout was cancelled after Benn tested positive for a banned substance.

Liverpool's Smith, a former world champion at light-middleweight, says Eubank Jr is "making a big mistake".

"Every time he has stepped up to elite level, he has failed. I know I am on that level," said the 34-year-old.

"If he was at 60% for the fight that never was against Conor Benn, then he'll need to be at 160% to be ready to face me."

Both men are on impressive win streaks, with Eubank Jr on a six-fight unbeaten run and Smith undefeated in three bouts after stopping Anthony Fowler, Jessie Vargas and Hassan Mwakinyo.

Eubank Jr, whose last defeat was inflicted by then world champion George Groves at super-middleweight in 2018, insists Smith is not on his level.

"Has he been in there with some good fighters? Yes. Are they on my level? No," said the 33-year-old.

"He's a competent fighter, but class beats competence every day of the week.

"It's a good opportunity for me to show I'm twice the fighter that he is as well as those he has faced."
