Eddie Hearn wants Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder at Emirates Stadium

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn has confirmed that he wants to book Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder at Emirates Stadium next year.

There are a handful of truly ‘top’ stars in the sport of professional boxing – and Canelo Alvarez is certainly one of them.

The Mexican sensation has had his fair share of ups and downs over the years but through it all, his talent inside of the squared circle has rarely been called into question.

Now, in the wake of his latest appearance, the search has begun to see who will take him on in 2023.

A rematch with Dmitry Bivol is likely being lined up for September of next year but as often tends to be the case, Canelo is interested in also fighting in May.

British fighter John Ryder, who holds the WBO interim super middleweight title, has been calling for a showdown with Alvarez for quite some time. His most notable win came earlier this year against Daniel Jacobs and, for the most part, he hasn’t looked back since.

In the mind of Eddie Hearn, it makes sense to book the two against one another at the home of Ryder’s beloved Arsenal Football Club.

“I am so pleased for John Ryder. Since he beat Daniel Jacobs, we’ve been looking for this big fight,” Hearn said.

“I’ve already texted Eddy Reynoso to say, ‘John Ryder is mandatory, let’s go in May at the Emirates’. It would be a dream for Ryder, he deserves it.

“He is a very good fighter and he’s the mandatory challenger for Canelo Alvarez. This could be our chance to bring Canelo to the UK, it would be unbelievable. We’ll see if we can get it over the line.”

Canelo Alvarez will almost certainly be going down the route of taking a fight in May.

With that in mind, you’d have to think Eddie Hearn will throw everything he can at boxing’s top dog in order to secure a major payday on British soil.

The Emirates would be an incredible location for an event of this scale and with Spurs putting on a similar show on their own turf, it’d reaffirm North London as an amazing destination for combat sports.

Buckle up, because 2023 is going to be a big one for the UK.
