Default Amanda Serrano to fight 12 3-minute rounds

    https://picks-s1.cbssports.com/boxin...ds-in-october/

"Amanda Serrano next fight: Undisputed champion to face Danila Ramos over 12, 3-minute rounds in October"

Undisputed featherweight champion Amanda Serrano has never been one to back down from the chance to make history and she will do exactly that on Oct. 27 when she faces Danila Ramos. The fight is the first time since 2007 that a women's bout will feature 12 three-minute rounds. It is also the first time such rules have applied to a women's unified championship bout in boxing history.

Serrano is one of the biggest stars in women's boxing. That position was bolstered when she lost a thrilling April 2022 bout with Katie Taylor that sold out Madison Square Garden in New York City. That fight, for Taylor's four world championships at lightweight, was Serrano's first loss since April 2012, but it still raised her profile.

Ramos is the WBO mandatory challenger. She earned her shot at Serrano with a four-fight winning streak, the most recent of which was an August split decision over Brenda Karen Carabajal to win the WBO interim title. Three of her four victories on her recent run have come via either split or majority decision.

"Danila Ramos may be my WBO mandatory challenger, but when we step in the ring, she will understand exactly why I am the undisputed featherweight champion," Serrano said in the press release announcing the bout. "But this fight is about more than some belts. We have faced a long and hard battle, united as women, to achieve the same pay, respect, and recognition in boxing. Together, on Friday, Oct. 27, we will make history and prove to the world once again, how incredible women's boxing is and that we are just as tough, dynamic, and capable as any man in the ring, if not more so. This is a fight for women everywhere to be treated the same as their male counterparts."

The last time a women's bout featured three-minute rounds over 12 rounds of action was Layla McCarter vs. Melissa Hernandez in 2007 for the GBU lightweight title. That was McCarter's second consecutive fight under the ruleset that has long applied to male boxers.

The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports has had all women's title fights since take place with 10 rounds only lasting two minutes each. This has drawn significant negative attention from various corners of the sport but has been pushed especially hard by the WBC, which has previously said they would never sanction a women's bout to have three-minute rounds, citing questionable science suggesting women are at increased risk for traumatic injury if bout durations were to be extended.

The WBC featherweight world championship is one of the lines Serrano will defend on Oct. 27.

Somehow... I'm not surprised WBC President Sulaiman is against it.

Going out on a limb but thinking Serrano won't need all 12. But it's a good step for one of the most high profile female fighters. The real shame is how Serrano v Taylor II has failed to materialize and now pushed further out after an L for Taylor last out.

Yeah, that's one rematch that HAD to happen. Shame it didn't.

On another note... Sulaiman frowns on Serrano wanting to fight 3-minute rounds.

But he's certainly up to cranking out yet ANOTHER useless trinket for the Fury-Ngannou circus.

Good ol' Sulaiman... a chip off the ol' block.

As bad as I talk about the WBC... Sulaiman always makes sure it isn't bad enough.

The wbc is run like a crime syndicate. The land of excuses, coddling high earners and constant double speak. I'd give anything to go back to that period in the 2000's where some networks literally ignored the trinkets fully acknowledging their open corruption. But today I'd have more luck finding a unicorn and a pot o gold in my backyard

"Amanda Serrano retains belts in historic 12-round title bout"

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Amanda Serrano joked after Friday night's bout that, after all of that, she still had enough energy to hold up her belts.

Ramos defeated Danila Ramos by unanimous decision, earning three 120-108 scores to retain the IBF, WBO and WBA titles. It was the first unified women's championship fight contested at 12 three-minute rounds.

It was a night Serrano had hoped would be a potential change for women's boxing.

"I hope this is just the beginning, the start," Serrano said in the ring after the fight. "I know I have other women following me in my footsteps."

At the end, Serrano and Ramos hugged near the center of the ring. There were no knockdowns, no dynamic finishes -- just a strong 12-round fight for the WBA, WBO and IBF featherweight titles.

It was in the championship rounds, where Serrano and Ramos had not been before, where the fight had its most electrifying moments -- including chants of "Amanda! Amanda! Amanda!" reverberating throughout the sellout crowd at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, where Puerto Rican flags sat on every seat and were waved liberally throughout the night.

Serrano shined in those rounds. Her best punch of the night might have been a straight right in the 10th, which landed flush on Ramos' head. Serrano came close to getting a stoppage in that round, bringing the crowd to its feet for one of the few times all night.

It had been a vintage half-round from Serrano, what she had so often shown in the two-minute-round fights she'd been in for more than a decade. It continued throughout the 11th round as well, with the Serrano punching Ramos around the ring.

Not surprisingly with the increase in rounds and minutes per round, both Serrano and Ramos started the fight feeling each other out more than they would in a typical two-minute-round women's fight. By the third, though, Serrano's typical aggressive style started to pick up.

She landed some quality shots toward the end of the round. In the fourth, Serrano chased Ramos essentially around the ring, landing punch after punch as the clear aggressor, getting one of the first in-fight rises out of the crowd all night. Serrano had her typical flurries in the fifth, using her continuous, forward-moving style.

Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KO) landed 338 of 1,103 punches -- averaging 92 punches a round, reminiscent of her typical style. Ramos (12-3, 1 KO) averaged 71 punches a round and landed 120 of 846 punches.

Friday night's card felt like a Puerto Rican celebration throughout, featuring several fighters from the island. During Serrano's walkout, Puerto Rican fighter Edgar Berlanga accompanied her while holding one of her belts, as the song "DE CAROLINA," by Rauw Alejandro and DJ Playero, played through the loudspeakers.

Afterward, Serrano joked she would celebrate how she often does -- with a burger and a milkshake, one perhaps even more necessary after fighting for 36 minutes instead of 20.

Ok fair play she did go all 12. But good to see a full 12 set for a title fight and doubt she'll suffer any worse for it.
