Default I disagree with Mike Tyson!

Mike Tyson often said that you have to be an "animal" to be in boxing. I disagree. You only have to be skilled and have determination to win. That doesn't make you an animal, it makes you a fierce competitor.

But there are many ways of being an “animal”. It’s not just in an aggressive sense. It’s also dogged determination and cold calculated instincts.
Skill will get you a long way, but it’s that “cold animal instinct” that takes you to the ultimate level.
Basically you have to be a winner , and animals , especially wild animals have to have that instinct to survive.
Floyd is a perfect example. He’s not “an animal” , but in his peak what sets him apart is that in his training and mindset and determination, he was “an animal.”

But I think Tyson meant it in terms of being a raw animal... like, void of human characteristics and sentiments.

Maybe in the sense that you have to have the "killer instinct" and to finish off you opponent.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.

You don't have to be an "animal" to be that. Look at Andre Ward. He was far from an "animal."

So you disagree with Mike off a 14 year old article on things he no longer thinks . But there is a plus in knowing primal urges and instincts in a fight. For the most part the inner depths you're willing to go to. But I think when Mike talked animal he was also talking bite ears off, crushing noses and breaking arms. That came later from early animal Mike. In fairness Mike was an "animal" simply on ring walk early on. Cycled training as a kid that would break grown men. He didn't have to say a single word. Simply glared in their eyes ring center and watched them grow wide before the opening bell.
