Default How can I make someone miss a punch with head movement

I want to know how to avoid punches with head movement? then how to counter and hit them back.
Can I trick someone into thinking I'm going to throw a punch with head movement?
Avoiding punches with head movement, good idea or bad?
Is this a good method in a fight, or should I try something else instead of moving my head?
    All comments help.
    Thank you

Yes you can avoid lots of punches with head movement and it's good to avoid punches because honestly who likes being hit in the head? Wacth some old Mike Tyson fights, his head movement was just outstanding, the sad thing is his fights were never very long. Head movement does a lot of things to your opponent it makes them miss, it frustrates them and head feints (faking punches) confuses them and opens them up to counters. As far as working on head movement I have no idea other than spar spar spar.

The weird thing about Mike's style was that it was so fundemental.
Moving side to side & playing peek-a-boo doesn't work for everyone.
    But it did for Mike.

Head Movement is a great way to accomplish many things, to help you win of course.

When I fight, I constantly move my head, I actually move everything, I keep bouncing, so does my head. This gets me in trouble in the late rounds, b/c this type of fighting gets you tired fast.

But, If you keep moving your head, your opponent will have more trouble trying to target you. You can't hit, what you can't catch. If you dont move your head, (keep it stationary) you make your head an easy target.

That is not a good thing, you dont want to get hit in the head.

So, what i do it constantly move my head. Especially after throwing a punch, or combo. This way, once you are done throwing your shots, and your opponent trys to strike back, your not there any more to be hit. That is the key, stick and move, stick and move, stick and move! Say that to yourself 100x over! you'll get the point.

    Or

You can do it the hard way and then you can box wearing one of these:

yeah i've heard a lot about head movement but i can't do it either. what i figure is that u can only move your head from left to right, right to left, going up and down wouldn't work too well in my mind (kinda slow and you can't move it that much). left to right is pretty good coz you can move quickly and pretty far, but isn't it kinda predictable. when i try moving my head i always go left, right, left, right, left, right. i can't do anything else. i mean you can't go left, left, right, right with your head.

    Strange ,someome asked me this privatley; ill copy the reply ;

There is nothing confusing about the fact that its harder to hit something thats moving than stilL.

thats about all you need to think about head movement at first.

If you stretch youre legs, hips etc ,so that you can flex into ducks and dives your head will follow your body movments.

The most important thing is FOCUS .
Your arm position will come to you as you train it varies and doesnt ever stay in a fixed position other than (keep them up at all times when standing directly in front of the opponent) when ducking and diving the arms are at a ready position to maybe attack and defend ;this will come naturally to you with time. Aside from the basics , there is no set rules to where you hold your fists... thats style.

i think you can only ever fool someone into a false attack using just head movement occasionally and really only when they have settled into your style and think they have you sussed out.

For instance ducking your head under a straight jab and going to the outside ;can hide your intentions as you can deliver a powerful uppercut from under his own arm as you come up or even a overhand bomb with the other outside arm which can be hidden by your own head which ducks at the last second before his vision has picked it up comming.

    (#1Knee , #2Feet / leg and hip movement = head movement

What if you mis-time it and move your head INTO the punch?

I've watched a few old Tyson fights and I just don't understand how he managed to duck his head out the way and counter. He made it seem so easy.

It's a good Idea to use head movement to make an opponent miss, but don't do it ALOT if you do you'll move your head right into their punch, practice trying to get your opponent to commit to a punch then dodging it, watch old Pernell Whitaker, Zab Judah Mike Tyson, and Roy Jones Jr fights, you'll get it.

Head movement is good with short rythym where you move your head side to side very quickly.

With head movement, you don't actually move your head as such.

I've been taught to turn the shoulder, as though throwing a punch but not doing so- hence the head moves out of the way.

If you put your right shoulder forward, then the hed will move to the left- avoids jabs and then swing your whole body back inti say a left hook to the body or head- that is a good counter after moving your head.

    Or you can sway back.

On the punch bag, practice jabbing on you toes and after the jab lean back as to avoid their counter but keep the feet stationary. This is done by putting the weight on your behind leg after the jab, so the whole body moves out of range, including your head. By keeping your legs where they are (even though you lean back) the opponent will step in to get into range but all you have to do is lean back in with big shots. Practise is essential for this and the best way to do it, is practise on a wall pad. Or sparring as,well, but practising throwing just jabs at each other- taking turns to jab lean and jab lean- you should get a good pattern and it gives you practise in looking for good counters.

Without hitting back in sparring but just looking for openings is often the best way to learn how to counter. Look to see if you can hook to the body, or is his right hand low for a left hook etc...

karate chop:"when i try moving my head i always go left, right, left, right, left, right. i can't do anything else. i mean you can't go left, left, right, right with your head."
You actually can get the left, left or right, right head movement down with practice (spar a lot) and you can get it going just as fast as your left, right.
I find it extremely useful to (if you are confident enough) throw your head forward and slightly down a bit. your opponent sometimes leans back expecting you to throw a punch. Wait for him to come forward and toss out a nice jab or cross straight into his face. While this by no means is universal, i find a lot of fighters, especially those who are intimidated by you, will fall for this. This is probably my favorite head feint.
