Froch – Dodson

One of the most eagerly anticipated British Title clashes in recent years is back on.

Super middleweight champion Carl Froch will defend against long-term rival Tony Dodson on a Hennessy Sports event at the prestigious Nottingham Arena on Friday 24th November. Sky Sports will televise live.

The pair have been scheduled to meet on three previous occasions, initially when Dodson was the domestic champion himself.

The Liverpudlian, however, unfortunately withdrew each time due to circumstances he insists were valid. Froch went on to win and then twice defend the title.

“I heard all the rumours flying around about why I pulled out, but my reasons were genuine,” said the 26-year-old Dodson, who claimed the English title last time out with an impressive four round win over Jamie Hearn.

“I can understand Froch being frustrated by it all, I would be myself, but everything was out of my control. First time round I had a double fracture in my nose. I was getting punched by middleweights in sparring and it was agony, so I had to get it sorted. Then, when the fight was rescheduled for last summer, I had a car crash and did a lot of damage to my back.

“After that I was offered the fight for September. I was told that if I didn’t take it, I might lose my position as mandatory contender. I only got out of hospital in June and I knew it would take a massive effort to get into shape after the crash, but I thought I have got to give it 110% and give it a try.

“Three or four weeks into training I knew it wasn’t going to happen. It was a big decision to make, but I wasn’t prepared to go in against Froch at 70%. I know that I can beat him, but he’s a class act so I can’t go in there at anything less than my best.”

Dodson insists that he will be in prime condition for what he predicts will be an explosive affair.

“I’m training for the hardest fight of my life,” Dodson added. “I’m training for 12 hard rounds. I’m not saying it’s going to go 12, but I will be prepared. I’m looking to make this one of the fights of the year. It’s a genuine British Title fight that should be great to watch.

“I’m not going to make predictions about what sort of fight it will be. It’s alright to say this and that, but everything can change when that bell rings. He hits hard. I hit devastatingly hard; I’m one of the biggest super middleweights in the world. It’s going to be interesting to see how we both react when the big shots start flying in. The one thing I will say is that I want my belt back and I’m going to get it.”

Froch can rightfully argue that he carries the superior firepower. In his 19 fights to date, which have also seen him win the Commonwealth Title, he has halted 15 opponents early. Last time out he became the first ever to stop Brian Magee with a devastating uppercut in the 11th

That fight saw “The Cobra”, from Nottingham, suffer injuries of his own. He fractured a metatarsal on his right hand in the second, but successful surgery has seen him return to full fitness.

“The bone was pinned in a couple of places to allow it to heal, but they came out a couple of months ago and I am throwing punches normally now,” Froch explained. “The only problem I get is a slight ache after training, but that won’t hold me back from throwing my devastating uppercut and knockout blows.

“Because of the nature of the injury, it is highly unlikely to re-occur. It was just because of the gloves I had to wear. I won’t wear them ever again. I would pull out of a fight rather than wear them.”

Froch is confident there will be no pulling out ahead of the 24th.

“It’s happened three times with Dodson, but I am hopeful that the fight will go ahead this time round,” he said. “He’s sounding upbeat and strutting his stuff on the Internet, doing his thing on the speedball on YouTube. He looked good, but my promoter Mick Hennessy works the speed ball better.

“The honest truth is, I don’t know whether he was genuinely injured or not in the past. There is a small part of me that thinks it had something to do with his confidence, but even if it was, that doesn’t look like it’s going to be an issue this time around. Not judging on his win over Hearn. He looked good and is coming off the back of some other decent performances as well. He is going to be in a decent frame of mind and in great shape.”

Victory for Froch will see him fulfil a lifetime ambition of retaining the Lonsdale belt outright. Beyond that, he will be looking to stand on the world scene alongside Hennessy Sports team-mate Junior Witter, who made history last Friday at the Alexandra Palace by becoming the first ever British fighter to win a WBC World Super Lightweight Title.

“I could be fighting for a world title now,” Froch added. “But I want the British Title outright first and I want to fight Tony Dodson. It is important for me to beat him before I move on. The fight has been on and off for ages and he is the most deserving challenger out there.

“Realistically, I think I am about three or four fights away from getting my world title shot. I will sit down with Mick Hennessy after this fight and we will probably target the European first, but if a world title opportunity came up I would jump at it. I am ready. Seeing Junior do that on Friday has inspired me to get there all the quicker. It was a fantastic achievement; he did Britain proud.”

Tony Dodson, Carl Froch conference

Where better to hold a press conference for the grudge match of the year, than the NCCL Galleries of Justice, in Nottingham, England. Undefeated British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch arrived early and sat in the wooden pews of the court room which dated back to the 1700“s.

The opponent in Froch’s upcoming title defense to be held in Nottingham on November 24, former British Champion and current English titlist Tony Dodson, arrived 15 minutes late with his father.

Jason Frost, press officer of Froch’s promoter Hennessy Sports, donned a grey wig and sat in the Judge’s position with the Lonsdale Belt taking pride of place. He began proceedings by addressing the boxers, “You have been brought here because on the 24th of November, you are to fight for the Lonsdale Belt; how do you plead?”

There was heckling from the public gallery as supporters for both men added their occasional comment and “Judge” Jason Frost called for “Order In The Court!” This was the first time that Froch and Dodson had actually met, Dodson having withdrawn from three fights scheduled over the last 18 months.

Dodson talked of Froch’s confidence and said “We’ll see how confident he is on the 24th”.

When Froch was asked if he’d started to get a bit worried when Dodson didn’t show up for the press conference on time, the British and Commonwealth Champion relied by laughing.

The atmosphere between both boxers was tense to start with. Then, Tony Dodson’s father spoke about the times when his son had pulled out of previous fights scheduled. Froch was calm and collected with his comment regarding this and said “Whether there was a good reason or not, Dodson had pulled out of fights, so what were people supposed to think?”

Froch went onto say that Dodson can’t blame anyone for thinking he was trying to avoid a fight, because that’s how it looked. And Dodson and his father nodded. But Froch did give Dodson respect, “Fair play to him (Dodson), for taking the fight,” he said, and that seemed to be appreciated by the challenger and his father.

Froch insisted that the Lonsdale Belt would be his and would stay with him. Dodson and his followers were amused by this and Tony remarked that there would be “no way”.

Promoter Mick Hennessy talked about the importance of this fight, saying “There’s a lot at stake.”

Afterwards, as both Froch and Dodson posed for photos, they continuously psyched each other, winding each other up as they came face to face.

Carl Froch then had further photos taken with four children who were dressed in Victorian costume, to show his support for the “Help A Nottinghamshire Child” campaign for which he is a big supporter.

The fight, billed as “Outright” is scheduled for November 24 at Nottingham Arena .

Carl “The Cobra” Froch on Tony “The Warrior” Dodson

Carl “The Cobra’ Froch has promised to knock out long-term rival Tony Dodson on Friday 24th November when he attempts to win the British Title outright in front of his loyal hometown fan base on a Hennessy Sports event at the Nottingham Arena.

The undefeated 29-year-old spoke about the long-awaited showdown during an interview he gave to the web-site of the high-flying Nottingham Panthers whilst attending their recent 4-2 win over the Cardiff Devils.

“I have been scheduled to fight him a couple of times,” Froch explained to www.Panthers.co.uk. “When he was British champion, (in early 2004), I was his mandatory and he chose not to fight me. He was training for the fight and he pulled out with an injury – bad back, bad leg. Then he fell off his bike – bad knee. The excuses kept coming out.

“It does seem he’s been training for this fight for over two years … He’s had a long-time to prepare for me, to get himself set and ready. He’ll come and he’ll be bringing a big force with him. He’ll be trying to upset the Carl Froch train, but it’s not happening.

“I’m going to make a promise to my fans this time: I’m going to do a good job and knock him spark out. I don’t usually say that, I don’t usually threaten people with knockouts, but I’m definitely going to do a number on him. It’s going to be one to watch.”

Stewart – Allotey on Dobson – Froch Card

Hennessy Sports promoted Dave Stewart can take a big step towards another title shot when he appears in the chief support contest on the Hennessy Sports “Outright’ promotion at the Nottingham Arena on November 24th.

The Wanstead based Scot will meet proven championship operator Kpakpo Allotey, from Ghana, in an eliminator for the Commonwealth lightweight title on the undercard of Carl Froch’s defence of his British super middleweight title against long-term rival Tony Dodson.

It will be his first outing since losing to Lee Meager earlier this year in a breathtaking affair for the British championship that has been nominated as one of the fights of the year.

Victory could see him line up an all-Scottish Commonwealth showdown against current holder Willie Limmond.

“It’s good to be straight back into a meaningful, long-distance fight against a quality operator,” said Stewart, on hearing the news that the Commonwealth Council had granted their approval.

“Titles are what I am after. This is a great opportunity for me to go a long way towards getting a fight with Willie. I know Willie, he is a great guy and I have got a lot of respect for him, but I would fancy my chances.”

It will soon be possible to draw a strong form-line – Limmond fought Allotey last time out.

Understandably Stewart, trained by Tony Sims, was a keen observer. Whilst he witnessed his countryman lift his first title, he came away impressed with his next opponent.

“Allotey is very tough, very strong and very wild,” he appraised. “He is very typical of fighters from that part of the world. He’s going to be a real handful, but he isn’t as polished as me.

“I’m expecting a long, hard fight – I always do. But I am a big lightweight so I’m not worried about his strength. I think I can handle that and I think I will win it on skill.”

Stewart’s preparation for the contest has been standout.

“Apart from a short break when I suffered a minor injury to my foot, I have been in the gym for 10 weeks now,” explained the 31-year-old who, at 6 foot, is a nightmare for any lightweight. “I’m feeling really well.

“I have actually been sparring Lee Meager. We have been helping each other out – he is training for his fight against Jon Thaxton in December. That kind of sparring is second to none.”

The Hennessy Sports “Outright’ event featuring Carl Froch and Dave Stewart takes place at the Nottingham Arena on November 24th. For tickets please call 0870 121 0123. For a full bill please visit www.HennessySports.com.

Carl Froch

march with me to the titles

“I want the people of Nottingham to march with me to the world title. I want them there every step of the way as I do what nobody else from Nottingham has ever done before – win a genuine world championship,” said Froch, who also made history as an amateur by becoming the first ever British fighter to win a world senior amateur championships medal.

“Being the first from Nottingham to win a big world title would be a major achievement when you consider the talent from the area in the past; guys like David Needham, Wally Swift, Kirkland Laing and Herol Graham, (Newark).

“I’m happy to go wherever I have to in order to do that. I will go and beat the top fighters in their own backyards, but I would rather do it at a sold out Nottingham Arena.”

“The Cobra’ is confident that, given the team behind him, his destiny will be played out in front of a home crowd.

“My promoter Mick Hennessy has the ability to bring the best fighters in the world to the Nottingham Arena,” he added. “Everyone has always got behind me. With an extra push I think something really big can happen. I’m sure we could get WBC champion Mikkel Kessler to the Arena.”

The 29-year-old deserves support. In his 19 fights to date he has won and defended both the British and Commonwealth titles, winning a total of 7 championship fights in outstanding fashion. Last time out he became the first to ever to stop world-class contender Brian Magee, flooring him twice in the process with heavy right uppercuts.

His performances have earned him a number 3 ranking with the WBC; the most respected governing body in the sport.

“My ranking shows to everyone that I am one of the best in the world now,” he added. “Hopefully that will encourage even more people to turn out and support me. If I was ranked number thee in tennis or Formula 1, everyone would be going mad. I’m in the hardest sport going.”

Froch does boast a significant profile for a boxer. He has headlined on Sky on several occasions and is one of the country’s biggest ticket sellers. The fight against Dodson will be the best attended yet.

“There is a lot of interest in this fight around Nottingham,” he said. “I think it’s because there’s a bit of history there. Dodson has pulled out on me three times now.”

Victory for Froch will see him win the Lonsdale belt “Outright’. The two-times former senior ABA champion can see no other outcome.

“This fight has come all wrong for Dodson,” Froch, trained by Robert McCracken, continued. “His best chance was 18-months ago when he was British champion and was meant to defend against me – even then he would have stood no chance.

“Now he is coming up against a fighter who has won British and Commonwealth titles and is ranked number three by the WBC. He is coming up against one of the best fighters in the world.

“He is telling anyone who will listen that he is going to win, that he is going to knock me out. But I promise the people of Nottingham that he is the one who is getting taken out – and in style.”

Froch Dobson Result

By Jane Warburton

Last night at a packed and noisy Ice Arena in Nottingham, England, British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch faced hated rival Tony Dodson in what must be the grudge match of the year. Hennessy Sports promoted the very entertaining evening, billed as “Outright”, and it was capped off by the main event, a fight long overdue if only to stop the long running verbal onslaught between Froch and Dodson.

Looking to regain the British Title, which he didn’t actually lose in the ring and to gain a Commonwealth title as well, Dodson looked obviously fired up as he made his way to the ring amidst cheers from his Liverpool supporters.

Home-town hero Carl “The Cobra” Froch made his entrance to the sounds of “We will, we will rock you!”. As he skipped round the ring, he purposely barges into Dodson, continuing the winding-up process that has been unceasing throughout the promotion of this fight.

In the first half minute of the opening round, Carl Froch’s weak defense allows a couple of Dodson’s shots to get through, but he immediately comes back with a swinging overhand left. Dodson ploughs in with several shots.

The challenger’s left jab catches Froch and Dodson is walked back to his corner to collect his gumshield which flew out of his mouth as a result of his efforts. Not quite the fast and furious scrap I expected in the first round.

The opening seconds of round two sees Dodson force Froch back on to the ropes momentarily. As they’re both in a clinch, Froch looks over Dodson’s shoulder and shakes his head in an exaggerated fashion as if to say “that didn’t bother me.” His hands are dropped low and he continues to look cool and calm as he looks for the right hand shot.

Round three and Froch is using his right hand more. Referee Phil Edwards calls for time and tells both boxers to “break when I say break and no punches.”

With 22 seconds of the round to go, Froch dips and cleanly lands a great right uppercut on Dodson’s chin. Dodson’s head rocks back and he smarts from the power of the punch. Dodson has obviously been shaken, when just seconds later Froch lands a right to the face followed by a left hand to the body.

Dodson goes down on one knee and is bent over with pain as the referee calls the standard eight count. Dodson gets up several seconds after the count as Froch and his corner celebrate. Froch wins by KO at 2:55 of the third round.

Afterwards, Froch talked of becoming a world class fighter. “I’d like a top international fight early in the New Year,” he said.

Mick Hennessy said they’d “like a European title fight probably in February, but it’s very political, so if we don’t get that we’ll probably go after an International fight.”

He mentioned unbeaten Canadian knockout artist Lucian Bute in a final eliminator then said, “but there’s always Calzaghe if he fancies a step-up. Forget Calzaghe against Clinton Woods, this (Carl Froch) is the best super middleweight on the planet and this (Calzaghe vs. Froch) is a far bigger fight.”

European Cruiserweight Champion and WBC number one contender David Haye was ringside and sporting a bandaged right hand, but looked happy and enjoying the occasion as he chatted with photographers. Also, ringside were British Light Middleweight Champion Jamie Moore, WBC Youth Lightweight titlist John Murray and WBC Light Welterweight Champion Junior Witter.
