  • Where Is Boxing’s Household Name?

When I was a kid, the person in my life that I most looked up to, besides my father, was a boxer. My father was the greatest person walking the face of the earth in my eyes, something he remained to be until the day he died, but I am talking outside of him. My true hero at the time I was a kid besides dad was Muhammad Ali.

Pop used to kid me, as I got older, because of the fact that when I was five and six years old I referred to Ali as a superhero. My favorite superhero to be exact. I remember my older brother would tease me and say stuff like “He ain’t no superhero! He can’t fly and he doesn’t have any powers.”

But to me, that didn’t matter because as far as I knew, no other hero out there could Float Like A Butterfly or Sting Like A Bee, so I had him on a technicality there. Fact of the matter is, Ali was a hero to many. He was a hero to both young and old for a variety of different things. Some admired him for his ring ability, others admired him for his moral stand in the late 1960’s when he refused to let a government force him to go against his personal beliefs by refusing to enter the military and fight in the Vietnam War. • Boxing Hypothetical: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Ricky Hatton

Last month Ring Magazine’s Light Welterweight Champion, Ricky Hatton, came a hair’s breath from signing to face WBC Light Middleweight Champion Oscar De La Hoya at 147 lbs before the “Golden Boy” chose to pull the trigger on the much anticipated showdown with Floyd Mayweather instead. This was confirmed to SaddoBoxing by Hatton’s manager, his father Ray Hatton, and we present this look at what could have happened if Ricky and Oscar had actually squared off in the ring.

If this fight between Hatton and De La Hoya were to happen, there would be no doubt that Oscar would be an extremely hot favorite. Factors of natural skill and power due to being the bigger man would certainly play to the Golden Boy’s claim for victory, however, would stamina, heart and the left hook to the body be enough for “The Hitman” to cause a tremendous upset?

The first three rounds would undoubtedly be crucial, more likely for the Hitman than De La Hoya. Similar fighters as Hatton, perhaps not as good quality-wise, but similar nevertheless have learned the lessons of brawling with Oscar. (more…)

  • Boxing Preview: Samuel Peter vs. James Toney II

The Young Pup vs. The Old Dog

After fighting each other in a controversial contest at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this past September, Samuel Peter and James Toney are set to do it again, this time at the American Airlines Arena in Miami on January 6, 2007.

This is a difficult fight to predict because I thought Toney won the first bout. I can’t go by anything other than what I saw the first time around; Toney standing in the middle of the ring, taking the fight to Peter, hitting and not getting hit. I’m hoping that Toney is even more motivated and he comes into the rematch in even better condition.

He doesn’t have the power to KO Peter, so it would behoove him to chip away at that body. If Peter loses steam, maybe then Toney can do something significant to the head. (more…)

  • Antonio Davis Named As Opponent For Joan Guzman’s Next Boxing Date

Undefeated WBO junior welterweight champion Joan Guzman, who heads a spectacular, pre-Christmas boxing show in his native Dominican Republic on December 18, isn’t getting a holiday cream puff as an opponent.

Instead of taking on a lightly-regarded challenger in the “Fight Before Christmas” card in Santo Domingo, Guzman and his manager, Jose Nunez, have elected to bring in slick and smooth Antonio “T Rex” Davis from Atlanta. Trained by Evander Holyfield’s trainer Ronnie Shields, Davis owns a sparkling pro record of 22-2 with 11 knockouts. Davis is ranked No. 5 in the new WBO ratings. (more…)

  • Boxing Result: Juan Manuel Marquez Guns Down Jimrex Jaca In Texas

Demetrius Hopkins Takes Number One IBF Light Welter Spot On Undercard

Juan Manuel Marquez continued his relentless march towards forcing a fight with troubled WBO Featherweight Champion Scott Harrison with a devastating ninth round KO of Filipino boxer Jimrex Jaca last night at Dodge Arena in Hildalgo, Texas on a Golden Boy promotion.

Former WBA/IBF titlist Marquez put his WBO Interim belt at risk against Jaca, a strong southpaw fighting in America for only the second time.

From the first bell, Jaca put his ten year youth advantage to good use, taking the fight to the 33 year old Marquez. But age difference aside, Marquez held a tremendous edge in experience, having faced most of the top featherweights over the last four years. (more…)

Last night at a packed and noisy Ice Arena in Nottingham, England, British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch faced hated rival Tony Dodson in what must be the grudge match of the year. Hennessy Sports promoted the very entertaining evening, billed as “Outright”, and it was capped off by the main event, a fight long overdue if only to stop the long running verbal onslaught between Froch and Dodson.

Looking to regain the British Title, which he didn’t actually lose in the ring and to gain a Commonwealth title as well, Dodson looked obviously fired up as he made his way to the ring amidst cheers from his Liverpool supporters. (more…)
