  • “Low Ratings for Maskaev/Rahman, a Direct Reflection of the Ike Quartey Fiasco”

    By Mike Casile (PBR)

The writing was on the wall for the Maskaev / Rahman fight, before they ever threw a punch. Their can not be anyone, with a rational brain in their head, that would fork out $49.95, to see two unpopular Heavyweights duke it out, when the week before they watched a man get robbed on HBO, with little or no consequence. Why more journalists weren’t’s calling HBO, the judges, and the New York State boxing commission on the carpet. It was a disgrace. I do not know, who is paying who, but there is absolutely NO way Vernon Forrest beat Ike Quartey. There is NO company in the “pocket” of the Philadelphia Boxing Report. We tell you the way it is. • Boxing Spotlight: Undercard Of Clinton Woods vs. Glen Johnson

Each of the bouts on Clinton Woods’ upcoming IBF Light Heavyweight title defense against Glen Johnson could easily hold their own as the top of a bill on most boxing fight cards, however due to the exceptional nature of the quality of fights taking place in Bolton, England on 2 September, they shall now make up a tremendous undercard. Fans will be treated to not just Clinton Woods and Glen Johnson III, but also a WBU Welterweight title fight with Mehrdud Takaloo and ex-British Champion Michael Jennings competing for the belt.

Takaloo is the man who not long ago put Eamonn Magee’s career back into shambles after winning a majority decision against the Belfast southpaw to take the WBU crown. Takaloo, born in Teheran, Iran but now a British citizen, has an exciting KO record, with 17 knockouts in 25 wins, with 9 of those coming within 3 rounds. He does however have 5 losses to his name. His career, while not spectacular, has been a good one and has held the WBU Light Middleweight title twice already and in a losing effort, gave Daniel Santos a stern challenge for the WBO title in 2002. • Boxing Perspective: The Heavyweight Picture

What Can Be Seen Below The Maddening Crowd

There is sadness in Boxingville as no American boxer holds any of the Heavyweight crowns. With Oleg Maskaev demolition of Hassim Rahman, the Heavyweight division is left with only one true American legitimate contender in Calvin Brock. While there are some hopeful below Calvin Brock such as Tony Thompson or Ray Austin, there is little to suggest that these heavyweights have the stuff to seriously challenge the Eastern bloc, in particular Serguei Lyakhovich and Wladimir Klitschko.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a mad dash to find the Great White Hope to defeat the great Jack Johnson. Now in one of the great irony of history, there is now an push by American promoters to find the next great American Heavyweight Hope to challenge the solid white Russian bloc that now dominate the Heavyweight division, any ethnicity can apply. Every where there is a cry, “Where is the next great American Heavyweight?” Sounds like a plot for the next Contender reality series. (more…)
