Another controversial stoppage blighted Friday night’s boxing at Liverpool’s Olympia when Derby’s Ovill McKenzie successfully defended his Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight Belt against Swansea Boxer – Enzo Maccarinelli.

Big punching McKenzie ‘took charge’ in the opener then began to offload some headshots in round two while Maccarinelli was backed against the ropes. Maccarinelli kept a high guard which deflected a lot of shots and he did get in with a couple of decent shots of his own but he took a right and a left hook to the head which rocked his head back. Referee Ian John Lewis jumped in and appeared to be checking whether Maccarinelli was alright. The Welshman didn’t look dazed and was nodding at the Referee implying he was fine, but confusing scenes followed as John-Lewis studied Maccarinelli’s face and after several moments – waved off the contest. Maccarinelli protested and trainer Gary Locket looked clearly disgusted.

Mckenzie retains the Title and improves to 21 wins (10 by KO) 11 losses (2 by KO)

Maccarinelli’s record now stands at 35 wins (27 by KO) 6 losses (6 by KO)

The headliner on the Queensbury Promotions Bill saw Paul Butler of Liverpool score a first round knockdown to win the vacant British Super-Flyweight Title. A body shot mid-way through round one sent Ellesmere Port’s John Donnelly to his knees and unable to make the count.

‘Baby Faced Assassin’ Butler improves to 9 wins (4 by KO)

Donnelly drops to 13 wins (3 by KO) 3 losses (3 by KO)

Liam Smith (Liverpool) v Gary McMillan (Edinburgh)
Eliminator for the British Light-Middleweight Championship

This was a ‘twitchy’ fight in which both men ‘teased’ their opponent with outstretched glove.

Beefy Smith seemed to be enjoying it though – smirking at his opponent. McMillan is dropped a point for holding in round three.

Smith gets the points victory 98-92; 99-91; 99-91; and improves to 12 wins (5 by KO) no losses and 1 draw.

McMillan drops to 16 wins (3 by KO) 4 losses and 1 draw

Paul Smith (Liverpool) v Tommy Tolan (Belfast)
6 x 3 Super-Middleweight Contest

‘Smigga’ looked serious and focussed as he entered the ring to face Tommy ‘The Tiger’ Tolan.

Tolan touches down in round one and is ‘wobbled’ in the third. Both were warned to watch the heads going in a few times. Tolan’s swollen left eye begins to bleed in the fourth and his nose is bloody by the end of the round. The Belfast man retires on his stool after the fourth citing his injured eye.

Smith improves to 32 wins (18 by KO) 3 losses (2 by KO)

Tolan drops to 4 wins (3 by KO) 13 losses (7 by KO) and 1 draw.

Matthew Fagan (Ellesmere Port) v Francis Maina (Limehouse)
6 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest

There was huge support for debutant Fagan who had a tough first contest against feisty Maina but secured a points win 40-37 to ‘get off the mark’.

Maina’s record now stands at 1 win (1 by KO) 3 losses and 1 draw.

Andy Colquhoun (Liverpool) v Youssef Al Hamidi (Dewsbury)
6 x 2 Lightweight Contest

Colquhoun stretches his winning record with a points win 60-55 against experienced Al Hamidi.

Colquhoun improves to 4 wins (1 by KO) no losses while Al Hamidi drops to 11 wins (1 by KO) 49 losses (1 by KO)and 2 draws.
