Boxing Round by Round: Antonio Escalante - Trinidad Mendoza

By Adam Matson October 29th, 2005 All Boxing Results, Round by Round

Super bantams Antonio Escalante - Trinidad Mendoza opened up Telefutura's Friday night broadcast of this week's installment of "Solo Boxeo" and it was largely three rounds of one sided action. The twenty year old Escalante, of El Paso, Texas, came into the bout with just one loss in ten contests while Mendoza, a thirty three fight veteran from Tijuana, Mexico, had dropped nine of his last ten outings.

Round one: the first begins with both fighters meeting at the center of the ring. Right away it's apparent that Escalante looks to be much bigger then Mendoza. Escalante comes out with a lead left hook downstairs that Mendoza deflects. Escalante stalks Mendoza and is throwing lead left hooks to the body. Escalante is landing the lead left hook to the body every time he throws it, using it to put Mendoza on the ropes and follow that punch up with a big straight right hand that looks to have cut Mendoza below his right eye. With ten seconds left in the round, Escalante traps Mendoza on the ropes and lands a big overhand right as the bell sounds. I don't think Mendoza landed a blow that round.

Round: Escalante 10-9

Round two: the second starts with Escalante coming out aggressive, immediately landing a jarring left hook to Mendoza's ear. Mendoza comes back though and faints a jab and follows with a straight right hand that lands on Escalante's nose. Escalante comes back though and starts throwing his jab, which deters the efforts of Mendoza to get inside. Escalante is varying his lead punches a lot more this round, almost completely abandoning the lead left hook in favor of jabs and straight rights. Escalante, with around thirty seconds left, lands a straight right followed by a right hook that downs Mendoza. Mendoza gets up immediately and with ten seconds left in the round is pushed against the ropes as Escalante flurries at the bell. Mendoza has been beaten to the punch the whole fight thus far.

Round: Escalante 10-8
Fight: Escalante 20-17

Round three: the third starts with Mendoza keeping his distance from Escalante. Mendoza looks scared, his guard is very high and close to his head, muffing his ears, which is allowing Escalante the opportunity to land his lead left hook to the body again. A minute in, Mendoza is trapped on the ropes and Escalante tees off on him, landing two big jab - straight combos, followed by a right uppercut that connects to Mendoza's chin. Mendoza finally circles off the ropes and as the fight is brought back to the center of the ring, Trinidad Mendoza's corner thinks they have seen enough, and stop the fight. Mendoza was just overmatched in this one.

Antonio Escalante scores a third round stoppage victory and climbs to 10-1 (7) while Trinidad Mendoza suffers his fourth straight loss to fall to 21-11-2 (16).
