With “Winky” Wright solidifying the right to face Jermain Taylor, the stage is now set for two of the best jabbers in boxing, in my opinion, to face each other, and for “Winky” to become undisputed once more. Two Saturday nights ago at the Mohegan Sun Casino in CT, Wright earned that position with a win over the durable, if awkward, Sam Soliman. Wright seemed to be a bit off his game, but he was still able to pull out a win by unanimous decision. The iron clad defence that Wright is known for was there, but the Austrailian was able to get through and land some hard shots to the face and head every now and then.
Soliman was also able to land a few clean body shots, but those were ineffective, as Wright managed to walk through the shots and answer back with a few shots of his own, throwing combinations to the head and body that had Soliman on spaghetti legs several times in the bout. It was later stated in the post fight press conference that Wright was suffering from a bad cold and was on antibiotics the Sunday leading up to the fight. Nevertheless, the win put Wright in the position to fight Jermain Taylor for the undisputed middleweight title.
Now with Wright taking care of his business, in dispensing of Sam Soliman, negotiations must begin immediately concerning the bout between him and Taylor. The WBC have already notified both camps as to what is to take place in the near future concerning both camps. If no deal has been reached by Jan 20, 2006, the WBC will order a purse offer and the fight will be up for grabs. Keep posted to Saddoboxing.com as the story unfolds.
