In a bout good enough to be a main event in its own right Jorge Barrios defends his WBO Super Featherweight crown against Joan Guzman on the same bill as Barrera v. Juarez II this Saturday.
This is a fight that only true boxing fans can appreciate; a trade fight, if you will. We all know about the prowess of Guzman. Unbeaten in 25 bouts with 17 KO's, Guzman is in his prime. A former champion at 122 pounds, he attempts to make the two division jump to face the formidable Barrios.
Barrios has 46 wins to his credit. A super featherweight all of his career, he too is at the peak of his powers. After winning the title against Mike Anchondo in four rounds, his two subsequent defences have lasted only three rounds. Although having only half of the professional fights of Barrios, Guzman has an extensive amateur pedigree, participating in over 300 contests, winning a Pan American Gold Medal and also boxing at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
The big question in this fight is Guzman's hands. He has had hand problems in the past and this is always a threat to him. However, against Barrios, this is a perfect opportunity for Guzman to use his reflexes and boxing smarts.
This bout has the opportunity to steal the Vegas show. Both styles mesh perfectly. Barrios coming forward with quick bursts and Guzman using his boxing ability.
This like the Barrera bout; it could be one that goes to the wire but I'm gonna go with the boxer in this. Although Barrios is great, I really think that Guzman is the real deal and can win this one on points.
