John Joyce claimed light-welterweight gold at the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia yesterday.
The St Michael’s Athy BC (Kildare) southpaw beat Russia’s Shakhin Aslanov on a split decision in the light-welterweight final.
Galway’s Frankie Cleary (Olympic BC) and Dublin’s Martin Stokes (Mulhuddart BC) were beaten in the 50kg and 54kg finals and had to settle for silver today.
Stokes lost out to England’s Ryan Garner on a unanimous decision.
Cleary was in against Daniel Asenov of Bulgaria but was adjudged to have lost on a split decision.
Today’s medal haul saw Ireland finish in second spot in the medals table behind Russia.
