At City Sports Complex in Cebu, Philippines, last night, WBO Super Flyweight Champion Fernando Montiel had his hands full with local man Z Gorres, but managed to keep the title by split decision over twelve rounds.
Gorres used his southpaw style to give Montiel fits at times but hurt his cause with excessive holding, losing a point in rounds ten and twelve. When the smoke finally cleared, Montiel carried two of the scorecards, 115-111 and 114-112 while Gorres won the other 115-111.
Montiel, of Los Mochis, Mexico, improves to 33-2-1 (24), while Gorres falls to 26-2-1 (14).
In other action, super bantamweight Rey Bautista, 22-0 (17), knocked out Marino Gonzalez, 29-9 (15), in the third round to win the vacant WBO Inter Continental belt and former world title challenger Jimrex Jaca, 28-3-1 (13), knocked out Simson Butar Butar, 15-6-1 (11), to win the WBO Asia Super Feather crown.
