Boxing Result: Manny Pacquiao - Jorge Solis

By Richard Eberline April 15th, 2007 All Boxing Results

Uncrowned world super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao took on unbeaten Mexican Jorge Solis last night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX to head a power packed night of boxing that also included Jorge Arce, Brian Viloria and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in an evening full of triumphs and disappointments.

In the main event, Solis used his height and movement to keep the powerful Filipino from organizing any kind of coordinated attack early on as Pacquiao pressed the attack with little success.

By the middle rounds, Solis began to come forward and put a surprised Pacquiao on the defensive. Solis' run of luck came to a close in the sixth when he and southpaw Pacquiao clashed heads and opened a cut above the Filipino's left eye.

Solis continues his aggression and soon the two men clash heads again. Pacquiao comes to life and smashes Solis with a two punch combination that has the Mexican in trouble but Solis manages to shake up Pacquiao before the round's end.

The seventh sees Pacquiao in full attack mode and Solis takes a shellacking but manages to survive the onslaught. The eighth sees more of the same but Solis begins to fall apart from a left hand that has him on the canvas.

The previously unbeaten man from Guadalajara beats the count but finds himself back on the mat from another sizzling left and this time he's counted out when unable to rise from his knees at 1:16 of the eighth round.

Manny Pacquiao retains his WBC International Super Featherweight crown and improves his record to 44-3-2 (35) while Jorge Solis falls to 33-1-2 (23).

There was good action on the undercard with a Mexican battle at super flyweight between WBC Champion Cristian Mijares and challenger Jorge Arce. Arce, 46-4-1 (35), was heavily favored going into the bout but southpaw Mijares, 31-3-2 (12), pulled off a masterful expose of the fan favorite, taking nearly every round in a shocking upset.

Former WBC Light Flyweight Champion Brian Viloria, 19-2 (12), also felt the sting of upset when the "Hawaiian Punch" was beaten by majority decision by Mexico City's Edgar Sosa, 27-5 (14), for the vacant WBC title.

21 year old welterweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. ran his record to 31-0 (24) with a second round knockout of Anthony Shuler, 20-5-1 (14).
