There was a spate of action last night in America and Puerto Rico and we start with Rolando Reyes', 29-4-2 (19), eleven round dismantling of former WBC Lightweight Champ Stevie Johnston, 41-5-1 (18), at Coeur d'Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho to take the IBA title of "Lil But Bad".
35 year old southpaw Johnston tried to negate the five inch height disadvantage held by the 5 foot 10 Reyes with educated pressure but the former world champion simply didn't have the reflexes to avoid the hurtful counters of his 28 year old foe and was pulled out of the bout by his corner after the tenth round ended.
Undefeated heavyweight Joe Mesi, 36-0 (29), continued on his comeback trail with a first round destruction over Shannon Miller, 15-4 (9), at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island. On the undercard, heavyweight Jason Estrada, 10-1 (2), knocked out James Northey, 11-2 (8), in the fourth round.
At Coliseo Pedrin Zorilla in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Juan Mercedes, 20-1 (14), won the WBO Latino Super Fly crown with a dramatic late twelfth round stoppage of Jose Garcia Bernal, 27-9-1 (18). On the undercard, southpaw light welter Alex de Jesus, 15-0 (10), won a battle of unbeaten fighters by stopping big punching prospect Bulmaro Solis, 10-1 (10), in the fourth.
At the Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, light middle Harry Joe Yorgey, 20-0-1 (9), decisioned Martinus Clay, 12-18-2 (4), in a rematch over 12 rounds. Also on the bill, heavyweight Faruq Saleem, 37-0 (32), stayed perfect with a six round majority decision over Sedreck Fields, 22-35-2 (16).
