Boxing Perspective: Roy Jones Jr

By LaTaurus Harrison December 17th, 2007 All Boxing Articles

I'm weird. I like weird things. As a young black male growing up in the inner city, one of my favorite songs was "Bohemian Rhapsody" by the British rock group, Queen. Weird for someone around my way. Of course, I loved Tupac, and I was raised on Ice Cube and N.W.A., but I had a thing for the lyrics of ole Freddy. I'm weird like that.

So, it would only be fitting that my favorite boxer would be weird.

I'm talking about abnormal...alienish. He had the ability to throw a punch as if it was a speeding bullet. He was able to punch almost as powerful as a locomotive. He could also run around normal boxer in a single blink.

No, I'm not talking about Superman, I'm talking about Roy Levsta Jones Jr., the most talented boxer ever and a grade A weirdo.

How can someone throw their hands so fast, and still have power on the end of their punches? That's weird! How does a boxer "lose" in the Gold Medal round of the Olympics, and still be named the most outstanding boxer there? That's weird!

To understand the grace that Roy possessed in the ring, you would have to imagine the original weirdo, Michael Jackson, moonwalking...on his head...in two feet of snow...in freezing rain. Yeah, weird.

Oh, in between the weirdo being a great show, he is an accomplished champion. He won belts at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. The heavyweight title win was probably the most notable belt won, being that no former middleweight champion had moved up to win that title in 106 years.

Sadly, like all the greats before him, old age caught him. Roy had a string of losses, including two vicious knockouts that broke my heart.

Now, seemingly having a bit of fire lit in him, he is trying to redefine the closing chapters of his career. He is on a two fight win streak, and is set to face Tito Trinidad in the upcoming new year.

Roy says that he will be champion again, and you know what's weird? I believe him.
