Default How 2 Dismiss 2 Champs at Once & Perfecting the Art of Mud Slinging

"How to Dismiss 2 Champions at One time & perfecting the Art of Mud Slinging."

Before I begin, let me start by saying that this article/letter may offend some of my fellow boxing enthusiasts and for that I will offer this apology: I apologize.

    That being said...let's begin.

First and foremost...I am ashamed of my fellow boxing fans and I have finally crossed an invisible line in the sand regarding my distaste for what has become labled as "haters" within our sport.

Certainly I understand that their are fan-boys, rivalries, nuthuggers, and other names that define some of us that support our favorite fighters...but after this weekend...after listening to many of my forum brethrein...there's no other word for what's on my mind. Disgust.

    I'm disgusted...deeply.

As promised, on Saturday November the 4th, 2006 Floyd Mayweather jr stepped into the ring with Carlos Manuel Baldomir at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada & handily defeated a rugged champion who had not seen a loss on his record in over 19 contests. As promised. At the end of the match three titles came together & we, as fans, made one step closer to having a unified star of the Welterweight division. Might I add...one that is worth talking about.

The fight went the distance and Baldomir gave it his best...but it just wasn't enough to his credit. The full 12 went to Floyd and it ended legitamately.

There was nothing for referee Jay Nady or the judges (Chuck Giampa 120-108 | Judge: John Keane 120-108 | Judge: Paul Smith 118-110) to be ashamed of as is the case of late with most of our title fights. This one went off with out a hitch....or did it?

At the end of the fight...the fight was all business and per the usual from Floyd Mayweather Jr: a complete shut out of magnificent proportions. The scores read two times over 120-108 and then 118-110. The stakes were high as this was a make or break fight for both men. The WBC, IBA, & IBO straps were all brought together for one grand occassion.

At the end of the night...they left unified around the waist & draped over the shoulders of the one true champion. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

This has not settled well with many of the fans.

Unfortunately...some of us have lost what the meaning of respect and on a whole...maybe even what boxing is...either that...or it's been misenterpreted along the way.

Many have complained that Floyd was "back pedaling and grabbing when he got hit."

Many are saying that Floyd was running the second half of the night. Many are saying the fight was a joke and a waste of money.

To those that say this...I ask you...do you not realize that this is slanderous to both men? Not just one...but both. This fight consisted of two men...two of whom were doing their very best to keep what they valued.

I mean, I really hate to interject that some of you might just not realize the full extent of what boxing actually is...but I'm starting to wonder. These actions, that so many of you are scrutinizing, are often referred to as strategies...& quite often...they are taught by some of the most respectable trainers in the game today. Often these tactics are noted & even acceptable by most fans. Not so with Floyd Mayweather.

The main issue is not what Floyd does or even when he does what he does. The problem with Floyd is the fact that he is Floyd. He has die hard fans and he has die hard haters. There's really no in between with Floyd Mayweather...the problem that will plauge him for the rest of his career...no matter how long ridden or short lived...is that he has more haters than he will have fans...and that is a crying shame.

I, being a fan of Floyd Mayweather, can say that he is one of the greatest fighters of my generation...but I can also admit that he is one of the most sorry arrogant human beings that I have knowledge of. Do I like Floyd? No. Would I want to hang out with or be seen with Floyd? No. Hell...I wouldn't even have a photo for keepsake snapped with Floyd.

The thing is...this is boxing. This aint personal. Does any of the above emotional strife I carry for Floyd Mayweather Jr pertain to boxing? No.

Is it justifiable to persecute Floyd for his personal life? No.

Does the fact that Floyd acts a fool in public, mistreats women, says the most ridiculous things humanly possible change the fact that he is a great boxer? No.

This isn't high school any more...this is boxing. One of the world's greatest past times & Floyd Mayweather Jr does it great justice while confined to the square circle.

Coming into this fight there were uncertainties...most revolved around Floyd moving up & facing a truely valid 147lb fighter. A fighter that was capable of devastating Floyd as he had Judah, a fellow slickster & speedster...there was also the possibility that Baldomir would devastate Floyd as he did Gatti a hard hittings gutty warrior that could take punishment.

None of this materialized in Baldomir's favor and now he has been written off as a second rate opponent who caught the right men at the right time.

Sadly but true...this has become the mentality of the debdicated boxing fan. The true pugilistic devotee. In this debdicated boxing fan's opinion...that in itself is a paradox...no...let's not be polite...that is a true sign of hypocricy. Baldomir was good enough leading up to the fight...but now...he's been demoted back to journeyman status and Floyd's performance has been poked & proded more than a corpse at a crime scene.

Floyd did what Floyd should have done...he fought a smart fight. He developed a lead. He outboxed Baldomir & he went on to win the fight by boxing from the outside...not running...but boxing. Many others have done so this year...but none have been scolded like Floyd. Floyd Mayweather...the man that rose from 130lbs to 147lbs over the span of nine years, took the titles, and dominated everyone he fought.

Floyd defeats another durable champion, overcomes the odds, takes the titles...but guess what...the "so called fans" still aren't satisfied. It's now time to write Floyd off with this performance...one that many dub as his worst to date...but prior...his worst to date was against Castillo...another durable champion and threat.

Next to satisfy the unsatisfiable "so called fans" must be a fight with Oscar or Margarito. If or when Floyd were to beat those two...Mosley would spring up next and if and when that foe fell vanquised...a laundry list of dozens more would rise.

For me...there's just a short list of three opponents.

#1: Oscar de la Hoya. Oscar, while past his prime, is still a worthy opponant and could very well be Floyd's downfall as he wishes yet again to defy the odds and conquer another weight class. This is something that I think Floyd should not do...but history and money is what makes Floyd tick. A contest between "the Golden Boy" and "the Pretty Boy" would be what most fans want to see materialize...as does Floyd, but one can bite off more than one can chew before one even knows it. Oscar would be a mouthful and I honestly don't know that Floyd has the stomach for a meal that size.

#2: Margarito. Ahhhhhhhhhhh Margarito. This one is just a silencer for me. Sure he's got a strap...but what has he proven? The man's a myth inside his bosses mind. Arum's got him so hyped up that he couldn't climb down from his perch with a twenty foot ladder. As a "champ" he's got four losses and as weak of a record as everyone screamed Baldomir had. Needless to say the Santos loss is still a sounding board for most of his detractors. While I don't think that Margarito is that great of a fighter technically...I do believe that he is a necessity for Floyd's record. As a fighter, Margarito does have the strengths to give Floyd a fight. The question will be...does have heart and fortitude to take the traditional accumulative beatings that Floyd hands out. I don't believe so...I just don't see him as the fighter to topple Floyd.

If anyone is that man...it is Oscar or Winky Wright. The latter is a whole other ball game that I don't even have the time to go in to detail over...ahhhhhhhhhhhhh fwock it...I got nothing but time.

#3: Ronald "Winky" Wright. To date...Wright is an enigma...he always has been the odd man out no matter what division he resides in. I honestly believe that Winky would cause Floyd more issues than Oscar. I give Oscar an edge on size...Winky? Skill & defense. Yes...I do believe that Wright has the skills & defense to shut Floyd down. I honestly think that Wright's jab & "shellish/hellish" guard would cut down a majority of Floyd's angles & negate his speed also. Wright has the abilities to walk Floyd down & counter him like no one else. Floyd has never faced anyone like Wright...and visa versa.

Just my opinion...right or wrong...maybe we shall see...maybe not.

Either way...I'd like to discuss it.

Sad but true...good discussions are hard to come by any more due to the constant "mud slinging"...it seems that we no longer discuss "The Art of Boxing" but more who can come up with the more witty slap.

In the past, I've been guilty of the some of the same shit that I'm complaining about...but hating on one of the better boxers of our time just for the fun of it...well...it really really makes some of us look quite ridiculous and I know that your'e better than that.

Maybe this long winded post will piss you off...maybe it won't...but one thing that I hope it will accomplish is that we all get back to the art of discussion...please people.

Really good article Wack, you wrote that? Seems like you need to start writing for some of the major sites, very good stuff and not just because I agree with it.

Personally, If Floyd turned water into wine the night he fought baldomor certain people would've still found a way to make negative of it. While it wasn't the most "exciting" fight, it was a incredible showcase of Floyd's amazing skill.

Personally, I find floyd's personality much easier to tolerate than some other top athletes, like all of T.O's antics of past years. I really don't have much to add here because I agree with everything you said and you know a hell of a lot more about it than me, but figured this deserved a bump so others could see it. CC in 24

Here's the thing...I wrote for...suppose I still do write for our site.

Problem is...I like writing for US. The forum. I like putting my stuff here...for us. It's just more personal for me to do so here...I aint that big of a glory hound...& honestly...I think that it's more productive here.

I had intended this for the front page...but again...I just dig on getting the input from my bwoy's here. I really value a lot of people's opinions in this forum & consider many of YOU/them my friends...whether we agree or disagree...this forum's my heart babe.

    No shit.

You make some valid points Wacko ! However one can’t help but take some of those points you made about Mayweather’s out of the ring antics into in consideration when a fighter fights ! . There are people in life you like , and people you don’t like.. For me as a fighter and a fan, I never liked flamboyant, out spoken flashy type fighters .. I like fighters that are confident in themselves, respect their opponents and keep the ego inside, fighters that don’t write songs about how good they once were, or talk about how much money they got . . For me when a fighter talks tough guy shit like “ its going to be a war / Toe to Toe battle” happy fucking day I thought ! When that does not happen it’s a let down. To the fan that paid $49 under those pretences , and for the guys that paid $1500 under those pretenses

I picked Mayweather to win by knockout in the 10th round. I thought Mayweather would put the Gatti beat down on this guy, and was looking forward to see what would happen . Just disappointed in the fight. Wacko I think your getting way to personal about it. Mayweather is a great technician and has wonderful skills , if anyone argues that, they smoking crack,, that being said he is an easy fighter / person to not like. So I don’t understand what the mystery is all about?

    by the way

Excellent article......PBF is the definition of Boxing.....all of the great champs had a chip on their shoulder (Tyson) or an arrogant attitude (Ali)...I used to be a hater until I realized just how hard it is to box compared to brawling/fighting.....It takes far more composure, stamina and intense training.....and it is called "BOXING" for a reason....
It feels good to be back home.

CC in 72hrs after all I owe you after today... Damn you Making me keep up with all this...

Anyway Good solid points you make and thats the bottom line.. I think its more of Floyds personality that fuels the hate, I dont mind when people draw the line there, but when they pick Floyds peformances apart because of the man he is out of the ring and not the guy in the ring, thats the problem I have.....

Like Dasammsaid I find Floyd more tolerable than most of the Divas in Prosports...Terrell Owens, Stephon Marbury,Manny Ramirez etc..

it boils down to Boxing not who is up for any humanitarian awards or Noblepeace prizes thats why we watch it,This guy like him or not is special just like Sugar Ray leonard before him Ali and before him Sugar Ray Robinson...I'm not calling Floyd great just yet and it remains to be seen but your fooling your self if you dont believe there is an empty chair beside those guys that caould very well have Floyds name on it depending on when he retires...

Floyd is clever IMO I believe Floyd is outlandish cause thats what he needs to do to market himself, just like Wacks mentioned "You either love him or hate him" so you either

    1) Buy a ticket or PPV cause you love him or

    2) you buy a ticket or PPV cause you hate his Fukin guts and you want to see if someone finally kicks his azz

Either way your makin the boy rich...So it works for him

Enjoy Floyd while he is with us competeing because there is no one out there that has his skills and potential and before you know it he wil be hanging them up and you'll be wishing you appreciated his peformances while he was competeing...

Again there is a potential for alot of interesting things and changed dynamics in the next month between Margarito, Hatton, Cotto how will you look at Floyd if 1-2 of those guys lose next month

As I said...I am guilty of the very thing I complain over...I loathe James Tony & his mouf...but I acknowledge & respect him as a fighter when he fights within his actual division. I have no respect for the man @ 200lbs as I believe he has proven nothing.

Floyd has moved up & proven that he can beat champions that other fighters could not...ie: Gatti & Judah with Baldo.

I don't like flamboyant fighters either...I don't like fighters that think theyr'e rappers...but the thing is...they are fighters first...& I don't listen to that shit nor do I think it detracts from what I love...THE GAME.

Floyd has always talked tough shit & he started tough but then got smart. Baldo has a hard head & has never been ko'd...after battering his head & knowing that...he boxed from the outside & did what he did to win.

Not all the fans were let down & not all fans have to have ko's...some fans like a technical tactical fight & that is what makes us all so very different as fans...& there's nothing wrong with that.

    I'm not taking it personally...really.

I just don't see how it's okay for some fans to have their fighter pull out a shitty win or a bunk decision...but it's not for Floyd.

No mystery there...it's just double sided bullshit...IWO.

Agreed. Pretty much all boxers have an axe to grind...you'd have to have something going on to keep taking shot after shot after shot after shot.

A good article spoiled by the fact that writer either knows nothing about Margarito or just dislikes him to the point of it blinding his judgment.....

"Margarito. Ahhhhhhhhhhh Margarito. This one is just a silencer for me. Sure he's got a strap...but what has he proven? The man's a myth inside his bosses mind. Arum's got him so hyped up that he couldn't climb down from his perch with a twenty foot ladder."

Nonsense. Of course Arum hyped him and the hype was rubbish but it's got his name out there. My point is what has he proven? Well he has beaten more top 10 contenders at WW than anyone else in the division(I'm using Ring Mag) and respected writers like Doug Fischer,Steve Kim,Dan Rafael all said he was dangerous waaaaaaaaaaay before he was mentioned as a PBF opponent.

As a "champ" he's got four losses and as weak of a record as everyone screamed Baldomir had. Needless to say the Santos loss is still a sounding board for most of his detractors. While I don't think that Margarito is that great of a fighter technically...I do believe that he is a necessity for Floyd's record.

To say his record as is weak as Baldo's is ridiculous. Kermit Cintron would KTFO BALDO or at least give him a beating! and ok Baldo beat 2 names in Gatti and Judah but Margarito, like I said, has beat lots of top 10 fighters. Also,to mention his 4 losses is misleading to say the least, how old was he when he lost at 147??When was the last time he lost at the weight? And he lost to Santos at 154 in a fight which could have gone either way first and second Santos is HUGE for the weight.

As a fighter, Margarito does have the strengths to give Floyd a fight. The question will be...does have heart and fortitude to take the traditional accumulative beatings that Floyd hands out. I don't believe so...I just don't see him as the fighter to topple Floyd.

Fair enough, the writer has his opinion but I'll tell you 1 thing,it would be much more exciting and interesting than most of Floyd's last fights. I can understand if peeps don't like Tony, that's not my problem but it's when they start saying silly things that it gets annoying like he's only fought bums etc etc. When so many writers and other fighters respect someone like they do Tony(the writers I mentioned above plus Shane Mosley,James Toney etc etc_),people saying he is a bum etc etc sound stupid....

The writer knows quite a bit about Margarito...I just think that his fans are blinded by Arum's mouth & whether Margarito has the skills to back it up will remain to be seen. I don't dislike him...I'm just not a fan of him like you are.

I think I was pretty fair & honest with my opinions...you just don't agree with me...& that's fine...hence the discussion.

Okay. I still just don't think that he has the abilities to neutralize Floyd's or his speed.

Also,to mention his 4 losses is misleading to say the least, how old was he when he lost at 147??When was the last time he lost at the weight? And he lost to Santos at 154 in a fight which could have gone either way first and second Santos is HUGE for the weight.
Beating Cintron over Judah pales in comparison. While I despise Judah...the kid is full of skills...he just lacks ring ethics & maturity. Sorry...but I do feel that his record is as weak as everyone screamed Baldomir's was.

I don't mean to hurt your feelings here over Margarito...but my point with this article was more to debunk the detractions leveled against Floyd...not just to slander Margarito.

If you think Marg is a much worthier Champ than Floyd...so be it...but Floyd has accomplished more & my point is that people should recognize such before raking him over red hot coals.

I'm not saying he's a bum...I'm just saying he's not the Lord Almighty that Arum & his fans proclaim. All he's done is remain undefeated against a laundry list of opponents who were there to be hung out to dry...Baldomir did the same thing...he just got two bigger & better stars on the resume.

Let Margarito & Floyd fight...I will stand corrected & respect him if he wins...I just don't think that he will.

Agreed. He's a skinny James Tony. Nuff said.

Im just curious, because after reading your post, and it making that much sense, im just wondering how you felt about them two matching up.
    Cc By the way
In all honesty...skill for skill I think that it'd be a great match up...but a stupid one for Floyd to take.

Shane's naturally going to be too strong for Floyd & if he keeps racking up these injuries...I don't think that he'll fight too much longer. I don't dig on Shane...but I'd tip the hat to him due to the scales.

    Too big...too strong...too fast.

If ever I could see Floyd running...that would be the night.

Floyd throws a shitload of punches...& theyr'e all pretty well targeted...his hands won't last much longer.

Nobody hurts my feelings over a fighter....and I never said Tony was a more worthier champ than Floyd,I just said what many many fans regardless of whether they like Tony or not have said, that Tony would give Floyd a great fight at 147 and that they would buy the fight.

I have not heard ANY Margarito fans say he is the lord or anything near that, they just say what they see,the most dangerous fighter at 147,which I agree with. Look, Margarito proved that he’s a welterweight to watch when he stopped then undefeated Sergio Martinez in seven rounds back in 2000 and then KO’d Antonio Diaz in 10 rounds to win the WBO title in 2002. Martinez hasn’t lost since the Margarito fight, has rung off 22 consecutive wins (beating a few notable European fighters along the way) and is now world rated at 154 pounds. Margarito gets NO respect for this victory. Diaz had ONE loss in his last THIRTY fights going into that Margarito fight, and that loss was to a prime Shane Mosley (35-0 with 32 KOs at the time). Diaz had beaten the likes of Cory Spinks, Micky Ward, Ivan Robinson, Emanuel Augustus, and a two-round blow-out of Alberto Cortes (the last guy to beat Baldomir). Margarito gets NO respect for this victory.

I think Margarito proved himself to be a worthy title holder by shutting out giant Danny Perez over 12 rounds in his first defense, and he proved that he’s the best welterweight out there by TKOing then undefeated Kermit Cintron, literally boxing the ears off of Sebastian Lujan, and blowing out Andrew Lewis, Hercules Kyvelos, and Manuel Gomez (and say what you will about “Shotgun”, but no one had ever blasted him the way Margarito did and he’s lost to far better fighters than Baldomir).(I got this from another site,I have the link, echoes my thoughts)

    Thanks babe.

    No shit.

Heh heh heh. Agreed. Hate will be hate.
