Oktay Urkal (fought close fights with Kostya Tszyu and Vivian Harris) waited last year for a payday.
After Carlos Baldomir upset Zab Judah in earlier 2006, the WBA Welterweight Title held by Luis Collazo became more than just a "paper title". Urkal stepped aside to let Ricky Hatton fight Collazo, seeming to hope to get a fight and a payday against the popular Hatton. But Hatton didn't want to fight Urkal, neither staying in the Welterweight Division.
Meanwhile Carlos Quintana won a WBA eliminator. But instead of fighting Quintana, Urkal allowed Quintana to fight against popular puncher Miguel Cotto for the vacant title. Again, Urkal seemed to hope to get a payday against a popular fighter in the future.
This time, the newly crowned Welterweight Champion would stay in the 147lb-division and at the moment, it lookes like, that Cotto and Urkal will fight in March against each other.
So, now Urkal may get his payday, but would he also have a chance to win against top welterweight Miguel Cotto?
While waiting in 2006, Urkal fought two journeyman to keep busy but not risk his position as WBA mandatory challenger. This is his recent bout back in November 2005 against 1-9-guy Robert Christea.
The card was retelevised on fight network.
