I know most of you will disagree, but Tito Trinidad was always overrated to me. I always thought that he relied on his power too much and never had elite boxing skills.

I strongly disagree. Young Tyson was in a league of his own. Anyways I think that guys like Calzaghe have been over hyped by one or two fights like he was against Lacy. I think that guys like Hamed, and Hatton were overhyped along with guys like Michael Grant, Audley Harrison, Jermain Taylor? Nah I like Jermain, um Vargas was overhyped IMO, So was Sharmba Mitchell.Originally Posted by liquid

Ken Norton. The definition of a paper champion. And I second the Eubanks, Calzaghe mentions. As well as Wonjongkam
For the record I refuse to recognize that fighter who holds the WBC strap at Flyweight and there for I will not even mention his name anymore.
theres a few people on here that seem to think that tyson was the most overrated champ of all time i will admit his post prison comeback was built on don kings hype machine but prime tyson was a deserving champion who dominated his era in devastating fashion
.....i mean i can think of plenty champions that were more overrated than tyson , a bunch of them have already been named here.....heres another, floyd patterson, not the most overrated but one of

I've made this debate before with MANY people and I always say the same way fighters loose early in their careers like Hopkins, Arguello the Marquez brothers JCC could have also lost that same way but he didn't....
I wont debate the quality of his opponents cause the facts are there but I will debate you smashing him like hes the only fighter in history to have build up a career this way especially in the time he fought....
I've said it before thats fine take away 35 fights (as most people that I've debated with somehow have determined thats the amount of 'bums' he faced) and his record still stands at 73-6-2 better then almost any fighter from his time with some great names on his resume. For the sake of your argument I'll leave his loses to Wise & Wiley on his record (eventhough they fall under your 'bum' category.
So now that we cut his career down and took off those 35 wins, his career is still there. It's funny though cause if you take many fighters records from the past eras you can easily point out fighters had 20-30 fights against what your calling 'bums'..... Don't belive me check the records; Duran, Arguello, Olivares, Jorge F. Castro, Jose L. Ramirez..... But these fighters also have great names Pernell, SRL, RJJ to name a few....
When you come out and label him as the 'Bum beater you pretty much, drag a shit load of other names with his' (if you would measure them with the same stick)
A bit hard on Sean O'Grady, 81-5 70 KO's loses on cuts to Jim Watt while winning fight easily.Originally Posted by DaxxKahn

Here is my longwinded thought on Tyson that I've posted beforeOriginally Posted by MR T
man it seems like this is discussed weekly. I have very mixed feelings about Tyson's placement in history. Tyson's wins are against mostly average to decent fighters. Not that this is his fault and not that many fighters(marciano, Louis, holmes etc) don't have the same dilemma in regards to their legacy. I think quite often it wasn't who he beat but the electrifying way he did it. I often ask myself if Tyson was a defensive master who out pointed and embarrassed fighters would we feel the same way? If he was the pernell whitaker of the HW era would he have such a fan base? Tyson embodied what we as fans want in our champion. I think people quite often get wrapped up in the sheer entertainment value of Tyson. His wins over Berbick, Smith, Tucker, Ruddock, tubbs, thomas, biggs etc are impressive in that he cleaned out a division and in the manner he did them but the actual opposition is really just slightly better than average. Tyson has two great wins: the destruction of Spinks and Holmes. Although Holmes went on to several more decent wins I don't think anyone will argue that he was the same man who himself had cleaned out a division. And I don't think we will ever know why spinks gave such a sorry performance. The biggest problem with grading Tyson's career is that his "prime" was so short. He didn't face any truly good HW's in their prime until late in his career. Obviously Tyson's management decisions and personal demons had a lot to do with his decline as a fighter, but this is a part of who Tyson was as a fighter. He simply didn't have the dedication and focus of other great HW's. I look at him alot like Bowe. They both had all the skills to be ATG's but couldn't capitalize. I don't judge Tyson's career after the Lewis fighter b/c it was obvious he didn't care. That being said whether he came in poorly prepared or not he was beaten soundly by douglas, holy, and Lewis. Great fighters rise to the occasion and Tyson didn't. When he met fighters who weren't intimidated, were bigger, had a decent jab and could back him up and tie him up he was definately frustrated. Tyson is one of the greatest power punchers ever, and arguably the most exciting fighter ever. He will stand as an icon in boxing of what might of been, but in my personal oppinion not an all time great fighter and hugely overrated.

sorry
No way Chavez was more overrated than Wonjongkam.Originally Posted by Samson3000

puts him miles ahead on Pongsaklek.

I am a big Chavez fan. He was a great fighter but he has be called the greatest mexican fighter of all time and he was hugely popular. He may have been a tad overrated becase of all that. He wasnt unbeatable but he was a great fighter. Im kind of torn on this one
