Just out of curiousity, does anyone have any ideas about why the organizations dredge up these mandatorys? There must be some money involved for them, but I can't figure out why they'd profit more from having a strong champ fight opponents with little or no pull vs. fighting top notch opposition that pulls lots of cash for everyone involved.

The trouble with modern fighters is that they are not busy whatsoever though. Its a pointless fight. He should take it for 6 weeks time, knock the bum out and then take on someone worth fighting...

Of course this is not how the modern game works...
Well i think "Cotto" is after the big fights, he is just keeping busy nothing wrong in what he is doing. I mean who else is there at the moment ?? no one just keep busy and get ready for the next fight against Margarito or Williams.
Come on Ice. This opponent is crap. Even a Judah rematch has more substance. Im sure a better fight could be made for that timeline. What about Mosley? Or even Collazo?
Mosley is retiring i doubt Collazo will want any part of Cotto.
Collazo has stated before this would be his dream fight. He'd lose a good fight and make a pretty penny in the process.

Let's assume Margarito beats Williams... (and that is a HUGE assumption, I'm picking Williams to win)

Cotto and Arum are not going to pass up the big money of a Margarito fight in order to fight this bullshit #1 contender.

Normally, I'd say Cotto would just fight him in between (say in August/September), but I don't see that happening. Cotto is coming off a very physical fight, and he needs time for his cuts to heal. He needs some time off.

If I were Cotto and Arum, I'd tell the WBA to go to hell. Cotto doesn't need a belt at this point, he's made his name, he can get fights without having some worthless belt.

I could be a typical american and say "He's from france and you expect him to be a good fighter with some punching power what are you stupid?" but i'll take the high road and i won't say that.

The guy's 37 but some of the guys hes beaten recently have ok looking records and hes had a title. 40-5 isn't bad (a 12.5% ko ratio against that group is but w/e). A mandatory is a mandatory. I'm sure if cotto had his choice he'd pick someone else.

That's all well and good for selfless champions and any contender, but this would be a problem for champions like Freitas who would not have put his title on the line if Diaz had been stripped of his title for not fighting his mandatory. Unification and PPV fights seems to be the ultimate prizes these days and just about everybody is trying to 'get the best fights' and 'get the most money' even when they don't deserve them. Cotto is a name, but while anybody trying to come up is fine with him not being a champion, do you honestly think Margarito is going to face him just so he could say he beat a top Welterweight without the chance of unifying titles being on the table?

If the Cotto fight offers the biggest paycheck, then yes, you better believe Margarito will fight him even if it's not for a title.

It's called "prizefighting," these guys are fighting for money first, titles second.
