I gotta admit... I've been reluctant to become a Hatton fan. Personally, I don't like his style of fighting. And secondly, I think his big victories over Tszyu and Castillo have some flaws in them.
With Tszyu, while I don't buy into the "Tszyu was washed up" theory (let's be honest... Tszyu was not too far from his prime), the flaw in that fight, IMO, was Hatton's style, and what he was allowed to get away with by the ref. His clinching, mauling, and smothering of Tszyu would've gotten him a warning early by any competent ref nowadays.
With Castillo, I do honestly think that was a shell of the former, prime Castillo in there. Some may think differently, but the proof was there for all to see.
And in his only trip up to 147, Hatton barely survived against a Luis Collazo, whose only claim to fame is now to have had Hatton in trouble in their fight.
So........... having said all that, MAJOR KUDOS to Hatton to take on Floyd Mayweather. At 147 AND in Las Vegas. Wow. I'm beginning to warm up to the guy. Of course, I don't think he's the most deserving of a shot at the world's p4p champ right now. There's veterans like Mosley, Margarito, and the also undefeated Cotto, who have made their mark at 147. But now that the fight is made, I'm glad it's at 147 and in Las Vegas. If Ricky should win that one (which is highly unlikely, IMO), his place in the pecking order should improve vastly.
