    Default Peter new heavyweight champion

    Peter new heavyweight champion!

WBC to give interim belt to 'Nigerian Nightmare'

UPDATE: Word is Jameel McCline has the inside track to be Peter's opponent on October 6....stay tuned for more.

With the back injury suffered by WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev putting him out of action for at least for the next 3 or 4 months according to his lawyer, the WBC Board of Governors has voted to name Samuel Peter as the WBC heavyweight interim world champion. Peter will be presented with the WBC interim belt in the coming days. Promoter Don King is still hoping to salvage the October 6 card in New York City, but will need to find a suitable opponent for Peter and get the WBC, Madison Square Garden and the premium network to buy off on the new foe. In any event, one Maskaev comes back, the WBC will order a mandatory bout for the undisputed WBC title with a purse split of 55% for Maskaev and 45% for Peter, subject to change by the WBC. If Maskaev doesn't come back within one year, Peter will be named full champion.

This is confusing so say Peter beats McCline then Maskaev comes back and they fight.

If Maskaev wins will be announced as 'and still the heavyweight champion', or will be announced as 'and The New!' etc.

I can't find it now, but I know I read somewhere that John Ruiz was offering to take the fight.

But McCall isnt available as he is already scheduled to fight two weeks later. A WBC eliminator no less. Which is also what he won in his last fight.

You honestly couldnt make these things up.

Oh it doesn't matter, two weeks is jus fine for McCline to do what he does bes. Win one eliminator against a middle of the road dude, then lose when he fights next.

The exciting part is imagining how he will choose to lose next, itl be hard to beat the dislocated knee, but id wager he might push the boat out for this one...mayb a nervous breakdown...or a heavyweight chicken dance?

Now, as much as I think it would be waste of time, it would make a certain sense, as McCline is the other guy still standing after the wbc freak show these past weeks.

I checked the WBC top 15 just for fun, as I guess any potentially sanctioned opponent should be there (neither McCline or Ruiz are here btw).

    2. Vladimir Virchis - EBU champ, rated top 7 by all alp belts. Good choice. 23-1 (only loss Chagaev).
    3. Oliver McCall - Unavailable
    4. Hasim Rahman - Why? Why not?
    5. Juan Carlos Gomez - Unavailable
    6. Nicolay Valuev - Unavailable
    7. Alexander Dimitrenko - rated dy all 4 org, but unknown and unproven. Still good choice though. 26-0.
    8. Donnell Holmes - Who? 27-0-2. But undefeated Americans look good on paper.
    9. Alexander Povetkin - Unavailable.
    10. David Tua - Has a fight lined up in October, but why not? Would attract some interest, and probably more risky than, say, McCline anyway.
    11. Calvin Brock - Seems to have fallen off everyone's radar, but at least Peter himself must believe there can be life after Klitschko.
    12. Chris Arreola - Too soon after recent fight? Too soon in, well, general?
    13. Chris Byrd - Unavailable
    14. Michael Moorer - It would be a bit sad, but he is still younger than Holyfield and McCall though.
    15. JD Chapman - Who? Also has a fight scheduled in october. But 27 (24) -0 looks good on paper.

Hell if he's scheduled to fight two weeks later, he should be prepared enough by now to make the adjustments for the time difference when he's fighting and adjust to a new opponent. Beats the heck out of McCline getting a shot, which I agree with someone saying 'how many title shots does he get' because lets face it, he is an also-ran fighter heading towards journeyman status.

    Kind of like undefeated DANES?

Someone floated the idea of a Golota fight, that would make for a spectacular KO for Sam Peter

The idea of a Rahman fight is a very good one....or Lyakhovich or Chambers would be good too

Yeah John Ruiz has been calling Peter out. I think it would be a close fight but it wont happen.

U reckon? Id say if Ruiz is serious about making a career revival he's gotta get big names quick.

I hate this shit, its just flushing whatever little meaning the belts still have down the toilet. Seriously, no one should be given a world title because the champion hurt his back, thats just rediculous. And "interim" titles are just fucking stupid.
