Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whittaker was one of the best pound for pound boxers of the nineties. He was robbed of two dominant performances over Julio Cesar Chavez and Delahoya (less dominant than in the Chavez fight but I still thought Whitaker won). Both were in their prime when he fought them. As he got older he got KOed by Trinidad but in his prime, his speed, footwork and boxing skill were second to none. Whitaker is one of the few people I can see outboxing Mayweather Jr if they were to fight in Pernell's prime. An outstanding boxer if you love the scientific/tactical/technical part of the game.

He didn't dominate ODLH by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a very close fight. I had it level after 11 and gave ODLH the last (115-114) ODLH hadn't reached his peak and Sweet P was past his, so hard to gauge who would have won prime for prime ( I suspect Whitaker) Was def robbed verses JCC tho

As for a fight with PBF - one of the hardest fights I could think to predict!! Just don't know!!

i havent seen whitaker vs oscar one in ages would have to watch it again what i remember is dela hoya was knocked down and i think whitaker has a point deducted it was very close fight which i feel pernell nicked it but it certainly wasnt domination or a robbery very close fight but i feel prime whitaker would of handled dela hoya comfortably winning decision 117-111 anyways on to mayweather vs whitaker too close to call i might give it to whitaker by split decision but too close to call really

He definitely dominated JCC. DLH didnt do enough to take Pea's welterweight title away from him in that fight i didnt think. I thought Oscar got hit a lot more than he ever had been and wasnt able to catch Whitaker clean. I gave Oscar the last round but I had Sweet Pea winning 7 rounds to 5...it was a long time ago, i would love to see the fight again...you also have to take into account that Whitaker was definitely past his prime and also (have you ever met him?) Pernell is super short. He has to be like 5'5" or 5'6". Delahoya I believe is four to five inches taller.

Floyd has better combination punching if you are standing in his range, but Pernell does not stand in anyones range and he is an expert at controlling the pace and his southpaw stance would have made it hard. I pick Pernell to outpoint Floyd and win a UD>Pernell was a more proven guy than Floyd and had much better opposition. Pernell made Azumah Nelson look like a 2nd rate fighter.

I would have to take Whitaker to beat Floyd like he beats everyone else. I think Delahoya gave Whitaker a tougher fight than Floyd would .The jab kept Whitakers timing disrupted, but Floyd I think would be on the bad end of a decision loss. Floyd doesn't have the quality of opposition or the finesse of Whitaker, who was defensive. Floyd is defensive, but he is almost in range of punches. Almost.. What that means is that Floyd will eventually get hit with a big punch.. And he doesn't look like a Hagler or Hearns type to come back and brawl.

    Pete

Mayweather has been fairly selective of who he fights. with the right match making a fighter can give off the elusion of being the best p4p fighter in the world.

Lol. Sorry dude. I just now realized it had been spelled "SWEAT" instead of "SWEET" on the topic. Usually I am very appreciative of sarcasm. I must have just been out of it when I posted that little wikipedia-style definition of who he was. By being on this board for a little while and reading some of your posts, I know you know all about who he was. And is. What I thought was amazing was his ability to capture so many different weight class titles at only 5'6. Pernell and Floyd would have been a great fight. Wish we could do an accurately simulated computer creation of this fight.

In this matchup I think Pernell beats Floyd in convincing fashion. Pernell would have become the counterpuncher in this one and made Floyd look like a onesided fighter. Pernell fought better guys and was all around better than Floyd I think. Floyd is a good fighter and quick and has good movement, but Pernell has good counterpunching and defense. Floyd can be hit with a right hand, although the left hook which Oscar has , has to be set up, and Oscar will not do it. Oscar has to go for broke in round one and bust up Floyd in a Hagler way against Hearns.
