    Default "Baby Joe" Joe Mesi won 36 (KO 29) + lost 0 (KO 0) + drawn 0

I know the world of boxing is a complex ranking system. But i was wondering what you guys think of "Baby Joe" Joe Mesi.

I didn't see the fights but his last 3 all ended in the first round.

Will he ever fight for a title?

    won 36 (KO 29) + lost 0 (KO 0) + drawn 0

Vassily Jirov ruined his ass. The guy should retire before he ends up in a body bag. Brain injuries ain't something you want to mess around with.

mesi was starting to get popular a few years ago, and started getting fights on HBO, he started getting wins over notable guys, and he fought jirov, won by a decision, but had like 3 separate spots of bleeding on the brain, he was banned from fighting and didnt even get to train for like 2 or 3 years while he was trying to get his license to fight back, now he is nothing like what he was, he was decent a few years ago and he was getting better but it seems now he no longer has the potential to be even as good as he was, and most people feel he should quit so he doesnt get killed

its not known why some people get hemorages on the brain and others dont, and mesis argument is that there is no reason to think he is more susceptible then another fighter, but there are studies that suggest once its happened to you once you are more likely to have it happen again

Mesi has since been licensed by:

the Puerto Rican Boxing Commission in February 2006,
the Louisiana State Boxing Commission in June 2006,
the Arkansas State Boxing Commission in August 2006,
the Michigan State Boxing Commission in September 2006,
the West Virginia State Boxing Commission in February 2007,
the Rhode Island State Boxing Commission in October 2007.

Just goes to show Nevada controls world titles for Americans i supose.

He is ranked 16 in WBC rankings.

We've had this conversation a couple of times already.

Mesi has been staying active, fighting low profile fighters, looking for his way back in to a more important fight. He should be at the stage now where he's ready to fight a top 10.

Apparently, there's no greater risk of second injury of the kind he suffered than there is of a first; meaning, the fact that it happened to him once puts him in no greater risk of it happening again than any boxer has of it happening at all. The fact that it was brain-related makes it easy to make blanket statements like VD's here, and I'm not disrespecting VD by saying that. Lots of folks hold that position.

But if he really is at no greater risk than any other boxer for the kind of injury he received, there's no point in keeping him from fighting on.

That said - I doubt that he is likely ever to get a meaningful belt or be a contender for a title. He might do well picking away at some of the bottom half of the top 10. He has some good skills but his defense against a big and strong HW isn't good enough. Jirov may not have ruined him, but he got to him way too much.

Nice guy,Probally has a great future in what he chooses outside of the ring and will do well.
Needs to find out what that will be because there is no Title worth It with bleeding on the brain and the way he catches punches and lack of "gears" spells beatdown Ahead.Forget the glossy record he should hang em' up.

Mesi is a nice enough kid and has some skill but IMO is limited and always has been....The injury reguardless of what the Doctors say is one that should not be chanced.....Mesi has yet to really fight a top quality HW at peak.....Even before the injury....He has always been somewhat protected.....

He can make some money where he is now because he is popular but if he steps in with the big punchers of the game he will get hurt...perhaps hurt permenatly.....

I would hate to see that happen to any fighter especially one with potential outside the ring to make a decnt living like Spicoli said

I'm not sure what I think really. Marco Antonio Barrera famously had a metal plate inserted in his head and of course Edwin Valero suffered a serious head injury and can't get licensed in the US. Both of these are doing/did pretty well.

As for Mesi, I've never seen him as more than a blown up cruiserweight really and think he'd do better down there, especially with Haye leaving and Mormeck possibly retiring.

I don't think his heavyweight picture is too bleak though. I would imagine a fight with Roman Greenberg may happen in 08 and as a longshot I reckon he may even get a fight with Evander Holyfield.

Now whether I think a Mesi vs Holyfield fight would be good for boxing is another matter entirely.

All I can say is I would rather see that than Riddick Bowe vs Tommy Morrison

Mesi has an overinflated KO percentage , suspect chin , and as VD says shouldnt be boxing as he has had serious bleeding of the brain.
so to sum up hes SHIT
