Default How Do Tall Skinny Fighers Have So Much Power ??

Guys like Pavlik and Hearns really and truthfully there so lean and skinny, it looks like a strong wind could blow them over. Yet they have so much power why is this ?? Im tall and lean as well but i can't hit that hard when im sparring, im just fast i never understood how fighters like Pavlik, Hearns have so much power.

balance has a lot to do with it. planting your feet. Accuracy. If you aim for the core of the person you are hitting then they either have to fully absorb the shot or go odwn. If a blow galnces of or is off centre part of the power is disipated. Speed is also a factor. It came generate tremendous power. Spinters who are world class have much more fast-twitch muscle than normal It allows them to accelerate faster and recover faster. Perhaps there is an element of that for boxers. Tall boxers puching down can create more power than shorter boxers punching up. You have relatively little power once your arms raiser above your shoulders. It's just mainly the momentum carrying through. Like you say though some people just have heavy hands for some inexplicable reason. We just haven't figured it out yet.

This question would have been more suited to the Ask the Trainer section Ice.

They seem to get better leverage on their punches...they are not hamped by any extra muscle to slow anything down....

Also its a case of hitting your opponent in the right spot.

For example watch how a Young Tommy Hearns aims for his opponents chin rather than just his head in general.

If you have never boxed do this little test to see what I mean.

Put your finger tips on the side of your temple (head) and quickly push to one side.Apart from maybe a tiny bit of discomfort in your neck or head and you wont feel much.

No do the same thing but this time put your finger tips on the side of your chin and then push. Its hard to explain but you should feel the difference.Your head shakes a lot more violently.

I hope it makes sense what I am trying to explain. Its a lot better to do it practly than to try and explain.

The point is a punch to the chin/jaw has a different affect than a shot that lands on the upper part of the head.

That is sometimes the difference between a good puncher and a great puncher.

It's because punching power comes from leverage.

    As an example.

Take a 2000 pound block of iron stick a short pole un der it and try and lift. It will be hard.
Take a longer pole and you will be able to lift it.

Not exactly the same but the principles are similair.

The only difference I get from taller guys is that they can punch down at their opponent. Makes it easier to land certain punches, for example, the right hand over your jab or their left hook over your right hand. Because they are already 'above you' so to speak, they get access to going over the top of your punches with these counters whereas you don't get to have this luxury.

    Unfair isn't it?

Power comes from where the head is and taking a punch is.

Once the hip drive and shoulder goes in to a punch,it generates a little more speed, mass+speed=power
