    Default Greatest 2nd Tier Fighter

Keep in mind this isn't necessarily fighters who've never won titles, but fighters who've never been in the pound-4-pound discussion.

Buddy McGirt was considered a Top 10 PFP guy during his prime.

I'd say it'd be a toss up between either Mercer or McGirt. Mercer gave Lennox all he could handle.

Yes he was elite for quite some time...Glen Johnson has also graced the P4P rankings....Was there a while after beating Jones and Tarver...

Mercer is a good choice though, Campos may not have been P4P but in his prime far from second tier...

Mercer was decent but never that good yes he had a few good performances but overall he was out boxed by 40+ Larry Holmes. And also out boxed by journeyman Jesse Ferguson. And a draw vs Marion Wilson ?? come on i know Wilson was tough but thats not very impressive going razor thin close with 2 journeyman's let alone getting shut out by one.

But Ice if he would have won all those fights he'd have been on the elite list and so disqualified from the discussion

He's a good pick here, as this is about fighter's who didn't quite make it to the very top.

I'd like to add Earnie Shavers. Massive puncher, fought a lot of the top guys, went distance with Ali and Holmes.

I think world titles in 2 different weight classes and fights against some very good comp and ending it all with a 73-6 record is pretty much successful...

I mean wtf get any choosier might as well change the title of the thread to..."Fighters who were not Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr"

Yes i know Bilbo i just think Mercer is overrated, i always see people going on about how he gave Lewis tough fight etc. But forget the fact that he was out boxed by an old man and went down to the wire multiple times against journeyman fighters who shouldn't of even made him breathe hard.

You can take Mcgirt right off this list ?? In prime and at peak he was top teir without question.
I guess what were asking is who is/was the best "also ran" kind of fighter??Journeymen.?I'll say Harold Brazier for myself.

Holmes could be 100 and probally jab, stick and have enough to slip past alot of guys (except Tyson ).He gave Holyfield all he wanted (as much as I hate to admit it),That cut was scary and His jab was always a problem for anyone.
Good call on Wilson Fight,Mercer was his own worst enemy at times with lack of conditioning and that was a horrible descision it that fight.Wilson beat him.

A good idea this... I voted Gatti as he deserves some sort of accolade for his sacrifices.

However I feel the true greatest second tier fighter* for me has to be between Charley Burley or perhaps ezzard charles.

*Second tier not in terms of skill or achievement but in terms of recognition and credit.

James McGirt for me , he was a joy to watch , was still good even when his shoulder was shot.
