Thread: Mouthgard- Is this normal?

Just picked up my new mouthguard from my dentist but I am slightly concerned.The mouthguard itself fits perfectly and I barely notice it in my mouth. But, its incredibly thin and the material is fairly soft. I am a bit worried about any damage to my teeth when i get a hard smack in the mouth.
The mouth guard is nowhere near as thick as the shockdoctor I had, and seems to offer less protection for my teeth. Are they supposed to be this thin?

The medicated mouthguards do tend to be thinner. I've heard many complain that they lose their dentist-made mouthguard when used to the chunkier bite of the shock doctor.

Perhaps experiment with a friend in a spar to gauge it's limitations.
(It also should aid your breathing.)

Cheers. When I have the new one in and tap my teeth, I can feel it much easier than when I can with the shock doctor in.
Although its really comfortable, I am a bit nervous about sparring now. Although keeping my mouth shut when sparring should be easier now so that should alleviate some of the potential dental hazards.

I just saw the pictures. It does look very thin mate, but I can't comprehend why your dentist would allow you if it wasn't adequate.

I guess if you're in real doubt you could carry it with you to a doctors checkup

A dentist made mouthguard is better then anything generic you will buy. And yes, they are much thinner as well.

I think I put this in your training log cpcompany a bit ago, but will repost this thought here for anyone reading. IF one buys a shock doctor, make sure not to buy the more expensive one, that I believe is colored. It has hard plastic that runs all the way down towards the back of it and it will cut into your cheek and open you up if you get hit.

They have a cheaper one with a lot less of this plastic, is black in color and much better suited for boxing.

Ha its a pity ypou didn't post that a year ago YB.

I had one and it cut both my gum and inner cheek during a fight.

The shock doctor is going in the bin ASAP. I didnt expect the doctors mouthguard to be this thin though.
I might have a word with a few of the pros and trainers at the gym to see if this guard is normal.

Oh for sure, check it out. But I have a dentist one now, and it felt paper thin when I first put it in. Every one I've seen is a lot thinner also. But yea...after using a generic one, it does feel weird at first. Just try after a few weeks to put the shock doc back in...it will feel like you are sticking a shoe in there.

Most fighters cant afford a custom fit,you boil a brainpad,suck it up,and slam it in to your mouth,suck hard,you have your custom fit.That way you have a double mouth piece,with a breathing channel no less

I had a brainpad and hated it. Couldnt breathe. Finally tossed it. To each his own though.

and to the guy who posted this original question, it's not about keeping your teeth in place. They'll be fine. ..you're not getting hit with a bare fist. It's about securing a tight fit between your upper and lower chompers so you dont get a concussion.

If your so concerned about your new gumsheild(U.K version of a MOUTHGUARD)then why dont you just get another "Shock-docter?"After all like the saying!..."If it's not broken then why fix it!"At least you would feel comfortable with it.Here is another old saying that is appropriate on the matter!...."If you dont have the right tools,you dont do a good job!"

Agreed. I have a brainpad and I love it. Just shop around and try a few out and see what works best for you. Like everything else, we're all different, including our mouths.
