No, I used to do some recreational boxing at Peterec's in Victoria, but that's it.
Interesting! Aside from the non-amateur boxing activity at the gym,
there is or was an amateur boxing program of which one of the coaches
is a former Seventies boxer from the Nanaimo Boxing Club, the other coach
boxed in the Crofton area in the Eighties.

    Duncan/Crofton
Crofton Boxing Club (oprtated in the Eighties

    Ladysmith Boxing Club
Operated for a number of years in the Eighties.
Formed in October 1982 by Bill Cox, Dave Alton, Dave Stone and
    Rick Brough.

Its first fight card took place on December 11, 1982
with boxers from Ladysmith, Crofton, Parksville and Nanaimo.

I've been going to the Capital City gym (again, just for exercise) for the past month or so, I really like it.

That's cool that you are going to Capital City. I understand that
Chris Jones is now involved in the amateur boxing program at
Capital City. It would be nice if all the clubs on Vancouver Island
could take a page out of the past to organize some all Island tournaments.

Was that the Nanaimo Boxing Club, and do you know what years
    did he train.

Over the years a number of folks that have been involved with the Nanaimo Boxing Club have moved on to coach or organize in other locations such as
    Comox, Victoria and Prince George.

On the sour side, in my opinion, is some folks involved in Nanaimo
amateur boxing decided to participate or promote "tough guy contests" in the Eighties. My main problem with those competitions is they pose
a serious risk issue. because you could have competitors with no experience and others with much experience meeting in competition.

Arrow Nanaimo Boxing Club - A new chapter - Stefan Melideo

With the recent victory by Nanaimo boxer Stefan Melideo
in National competition, it adds a new chapter to the history of the Nanaimo Boxing Club.

But, I wonder how many of the Nanaimo Boxing Club ex-members are aware of
this new chapter in the never ending story of the club from 1971 to 2009
    with the performance of Melideo.

Then again, I wonder if Stefan and his club mates are aware of
the complete history of the boxing club from the beginnings in 1971
and connections to theold Newcastle Boxing Club and its
days of glory from 1963 to 1968.

The song never ends, but the singers change, and the music plays on!

zzNANAIMO BOXING CLUB - 1971 to 2011: by brian zelley

There is now a new group site called NANAIMO BOXING HISTORY on Facebook.
The objective is to touch on all boxing history in Nanaimo including the Newcastle Boxing Club of 1963 to 1968.

    FORTY YEARS and STILL STANDING

The official start date of the Nanaimo Boxing Club is September 1971. but the doors to the first facility took place in August '71.
No official anniversary or reunion has been planned, but if not, folks can celebrate the birth of the club in their own way or pass it by.
