Thread: The Battle of the Long Count

I saw the highlite for the first time tonight. It seems that Tunney gets up easily when the ref counts 6. He also seems to be alert and watching the ref by the time the ref counts 3. Maybe the original delay to send Dempsey to a neutral corner tales 4 counts.

So if the count had started on time, Tunney would have had little problem getting to his feet before the ten count, with very little difference in the actual rest time, one or two seconds at most

So it really was a non-issue. Here's the evidence.

The ref was right, Dempsey needed to go to a neutral corner. I don't like this guy starting the count outside the ring and then the ref picking it up that we see today.

The whole controversy was perpetuated by die hard Dempsey fans.

Now days sometimes you will even hear Tyson fanboys make the same argument about the first Tyson vs Douglas knock down.

I remember seeing this ages ago it was atleast 14-15 seconds, the rules had just been changed then thats why Jack Dempsey didn't go to the neutral corner, but the ref was also counting very slow i think Jack Dempsey should of got the win.

But Gene Tunney was the better fighter clearly, Jack Dempsey didn't win many rounds out of there two fights combined. Gene Tunney was the first Heavyweight that used movement like that he was a terrific fighter, and was only beat by Harry Greb i believe and Gene Tunney beat Harry Greb 2-1. So that just shows you how great Gene Tunney was.

i always thought that it really didnt matter. To me it seens that tunney could of gotten up even if the count was on time, and besides it wasnt his fault that his opponent broke the rules.

Tunney was in no danger he actually was smart and knew what was going on and used it to his advantage...Not that he was really hurt but why jump up too fast...

If the rules were not changed though the Dempsey of classic would have abused him the second he tried to get up

I hear Tyson fans saying this also and yes Douglas was down longer than the referee's count but he was waiting for the count. Don King blew that incident out of proportion!
