Can anyone settle a debate i am having on another site i think freddie roach and enzo calzage are great trainers but i am getting alot of stick over it who is the best trainer in the world at the moment?

I would say either Freddie Roach or Floyd Mayweather snr its not Enzo Calzaghe thats for sure.

I think as far as trainers goes its a case of horses for courses as the saying goes.


For example not many trainers would have put up with or been able to work with a young Cassius Clay but Dundee had the right mentality to work with him and improve his style with out changing his natural god given style.

Archie Moore was Clays first pro trainer and they could not work together,thats not to say that Moore was a bad its just a case of a boxer and trainer geling together.

it is all about styles i think diffrent styles suit diffrent trainers

Thats exactly what i am saying the argument is they belive kevin rooney is the best ever my point is he is the best in damato style or peek a boo as its called but cannot teach anything else i was trying to explain different trainers have different styes that have to match each other but they insist that rooney is the best ever

Floyd Sr hands down, imo.

Many trainers have their strong points. People like Roach are best for short-reached fighters. People who normally do their best work inside, or are shorter. Roaches specialty. Where as we have guys like E-man who seems to be best with jabbers, who guys with a longer reach or height.

Then we Have Floyd Sr. Who can mold a Champion from the begining OR lend a hand to a champion at any point of their careers and teach them new tricks without turning them into a different fighter - just a more improved version of what they already were.

This, imo, is what makes a trainer stand out. Ricky Hatton will still be Ricky hatton at the end of the day, but now he will have a bag of new defensive wizardry at his disposal whilst moving foward. Guys like Flody Sr are good for this... teaching old dogs new tricks without changing the breed of the dog.

Depends on what style you are looking for and if you are looking for a trainer to train your strong points. There are some excellent trainers out there who only have one gym that's not Wild Card or in Vegas and they are great trainers. I really like Barry Hunter who has molded some very good fighters out of the Petersons and Ty Barnett, as well as guys like Virgil Hunter who trains Andre Ward who is a great trainer, incredibly intelligent and just knows how to train. Also so much of it is just personal bonding, look at Dan Birmingham and Winky Wright. Winky a great tactician who learned everything he knows under Birmingham and for Wright, a guy with trust issues that have hampered his career at times, there is no one better for him then Birmingham and his answer will be Birmingham.

There isn't one trainer who is just the blanket best guys in the world, it differs on a fighter to fighter basis. The saying in college football goes that the best coach is the coach with the best players. In boxing the best trainer is the one who is best for that fighters style or temperment. VBarry Hunter, Virgil Hunter and Dan Birmingham are going to be a lot better fit for some fighters then Manny Steward or Freddie Roach could ever be.

Have all done shitt under him.

Actually Lamon Brewster overachieved under McGirt. So did Tarver really imo. And again Buddy's fighters tend to be more movers who's game is predicated on timing more then anything and all his fighters with the exception of Malignaggi (who has also overachieved probably) have a really sharp sense of timing even his son does when he's not gassing out down the stretch.

Didn't he learn all of that under Atlas and Cus?

It's a shame teddy doesn't train anyone anymore, i thought he was superb and pushed fighters to their very best.

I don't think there is such a thing as the best trainer... i think different trainers offer different things.

He learned under cus who invented the style and passed the torch to rooney. atlas learned from cus as well but never taught rooney. Atlas was tysons orignal trainer after he was handed over by bobby stewart but fell out over discipline issues with tyson

There is no #1 best trainer, just a group of guys who make up the top tier.

Beristain, Mayweather Sr, Roach, etc.

I think Steward is a great heavyweight trainer, but slightly overrated in the lower weights.
