Darchinyan KOs Mijares, wants Donaire
Vic Darchinyan immediately vowed revenge over Filipino Nonito Donaire after pulling off a stunning KO of Mexico’s Cristian Mijares in Carson, California to unify the super-flyweight division.
IBF champ Darchinyan also claimed the WBA and WBC titles by crushing Mijares at the end of round nine in a fight he totally dominated.
Darchinyan is now 31-1-1 (25 KOs) and super keen to gain revenge over Donaire who handed him his only defeat with a fifth-round KO last year to take the IBF flyweight title.
``I will destroy Donaire,’’ Darchinyan said, ``even easier than I beat Mijares.
``I kept my promise. I said I would destroy Mijares, I said I would prove all the writers who picked Mijares wrong.
``I said I would show my skills and my power and knock him out and I kept my promise.
Referee Lou Moret stopped the fight at 3min of round nine as Mijares was out badly hurt underneath the ropes.
Under enormous pressure from Darchinyan’s power, Mijares, 27, five years younger and with an 8cm reach advantage, fought the wrong fight from the opening bell.
He was dropped – for just the second time in his career - by a hard left uppercut by Darchinyan with 19 seconds left the first round and though he wanted to trade punches with Vic in the second and third, even waving Darchinyan in, he was copping the worst of it.
Rather than rely on his boxing skills he went into the trenches with the powerful Aussie-Armenian in a game the Mexican was never going to win.
The cocky Darchinyan proved he is one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound.
All three judges had Darchinyan ahead 79-72 at the time of the stoppage.
Darchinyan’s promoter Gary Shaw said Darchinyan was willing to fight anyone in the world – even Oscar De La Hoya at 152lb
Mijares fell to 36-4-2 (14 KOs) and suffered his first loss since 2002.
I picked Donaire to win the 1st fight... and I still pick him to win the rematch with Vic... even at 115 lbs...
