    Default Sulaiman's Ultimatum to Pacquiao

Pacquiao offered Sulaiman $20,000 for permission to hang on to his WBC belt in fighting De La Hoya.

Sulaiman has rejected this offer and demanded a $100,000 payment from Pacquiao for allowing him to fight De La Hoya in the non-title fight.

Sulaiman was quoted as saying "In this fight we estimate that he might make more than Ten Million Dollars and he offered to pay only $ 20,000, like if the WBC were beggars."

Fighters make belts, belts don't make fighters....what are they doing extra in this fight that they wouldn't be doing in less high profile fights. Thats a mighty big jump up.

This story highlights why boxing fans should ignore the alphabet gangs and follow the one organization that does not charge sanctioning fees and does not strip champions: The Ring

Well in this case, I don't think Pacquiao is necessarily the number one lightweight in the world. He moved up and demolished Diaz. Marquez moved up and demolished Casamayor and is now the Ring champion. Nate Campbell still has most of the belts. In this day and age of sanctioning bodies, if Pacquiao doesn't keep his belt then he's not really gonna be recognized as anything at 135. This will hurt his negotiations with fighters when he comes back down. It would be different if he were considered the Ring champion at 135 but he's not. If he's planning to campaign at 135 after coming back down then he should pay the $100,000 to keep a belt. Now, if he's talking about chasing Hatton and Mayweather fights then he shouldn't because he wouldn't need that belt. It sucks but sanctioning bodies are here to say unless the government intervenes.

Are you asking why not settle for 20k, but ask for 100k?

It was mentioned in another thread that the standard WBC-fee for moving up and fight non-title fights is 1%. As much as I dislike that, if those are the rules, it is only fair to make Pacquiao pay or strip him of his title. And yes, the value of the fight is definitely more like $10m than $2m.

Pacquaio doesnt need the belt though, so he could easily let it go, leaving the WBC without money at all. I wouldnt mind seeing that.

You're forgetting that he's Manny Pacquiao. The name alone has cache and I'd wager Marquez wants to fight him because of prior history moreso than a belt and Nate Campbell seems like a guy who just doesn't duck. Sure, it may hurt negotiations, but these are still gettable fights for the Pac-Man, regardless of whether or not he loses to De La Hoya and regardless of whether or not he has a belt.
    Oops

These are world organizations, even if the US changes its laws, it will have no effect on these alphabet gangs.

Dont worry, they will put themselves out of business, because of their own greed. The WBA having 3 belts per division, the WBC charging sanctioning fees for fights that does not involve them, the WBO created interim titles to be fought two weeks after the mandatory is scheduled.

Once you reach the level of success that Pacquiao has titles mean nothing really...They are trinkets to be looked at on your mantle in the later years....

If he has no title will he be less a fighter?.....Will he lose his status as one of the top men in the sport?......

So the WBC strips him......He can pick another one up at will...and we all know this
