Default Mundine to debut at 160.

Anthony Mundine is having his first fight at middleweigh tonight against another relative unknown Rafael Sosa Pintos 31(12)-2-0. It should be an easy night.
Apparently Mundine is now working with GBP to try and crack the US market. I think moving to MW is a bit late, but could still work in his favour, he was always a bit small at 168.

With the slim pickings at 160 i think he can make some noise if he takes the big fights. Any thoughts?

He's always(or for some time) been good enough to get high profile fights, just a matter of whether he actually wants anything to do with them. Of course he'd have a crack at beating Abraham or Pavlik I reckon, in fact I think I would have a hard time making him a big underdog in either matchup. Who knows if he even cares at this point though.

Yeah he doesnt seem to have the drive anymore, even if he talks a good fight. Had high hopes for him when he owned Green and Soliman looked like he could be anything. Since then he has just been treading water and his name isnt broughtup for any big fights these days.

Wow that's tonight. They want $50 to watch it on Main Event. Stuff that. Well hopefully he can do well and get some good fights in the US as time is marching on for "The Man". 160 Should suit him.

"if he takes the big fights" Eagle that is the $million dollar question, can Mundine really match it with the likes of Pavlik and Abraham? Could he beat Felix Sturm? 2009 will be the defining year for Mundine and he must go to the USA and make an impact against a known opponent for i fear all 3 of the fighters i mentioned will not look twice at him for a fight.

Here is one from left field...throw out the challenge to Winky?

I think Mundine has mentioned Wright's name already. You are spot on about fighting top level fighters now. His time is running out and he now needs to back up all that talk. Vic has now it's time for the other big mouth's to do the same. Mundine to step up and N'Dou to beat Cintron. Not that I think the latter is too likely.

Mundine is a wasted talent. He calls himself the champ and says he wants to fight the best and then dusts off another corpse for a PPV date.

I've seen a few of Mundines fights and he has all the talent in the world. He made Green look like an amateur. Soliman was undersized but to his credit, AM took him out and that's no mean feat.

His chin is suspect but what I really question his drive. I don't think he wants to fight the best anymore, just keep making money and looking good in the ring.

    A shame.

I'd have to agree that Mundine has made a concious career decision to stay in Australia and fight out the remainder of his career just outside the A-class level.

There are many old threads where his name has been thrown around as a possible matchup for some of our top ranked or prospect guys at 168, and at 160 there is surely a few big names you could stand him along side.

But there has never really ever been any energy surrounding any big matchups with Mundine... And I don't think any big matchup is going to fall out of the sky now, unless Mundine and his team suddenly have a deep drive to actively and fiercly chase up some big matchups... If he went after some big names, and was prepared to take even a horriblyl purse split of even 80/20 to take a fight with a name fighter,,, then he could get his name out there.. Taking a big name fight and winning on ANY purse will put his respect and potential in the boxing circle much higher, and he can truely start calling out guys who are the p4p best....

And most people who have seen Mundine fight and his potential know that it is not ridiculous by any stretch to imagine him in there with the best...

But it all comes back to the decisions of him and his camp, and where their drive lies.... I think the decision has been made to keep his career in Australia.. And that is a real shame considering so many would get right behind him if he even looked like he was going to start chasing greatness..

Maybe there is just a lot of boxing politics in the background that have prevented a hungry mundine breaking it into the US and fighting the top guys, and I just don't know about it... But I just can't believe that that is all that has held Mundine back from what he could have and still has a chance of achieving.. And that's a real shame to ANY fan of any fighter.. To see potential not explored....

    Agreed completely.

He needs to do what Billy Dib and Vic Darchiniyan have done and fight in the states. The US is the home of big name boxing. It's actually well overdue and possibly too late.

I doubt Mundine is going to improve much if at all from here on out. He may have missed his chance through poor decisions (or mismanagement). It's all about profile for him now.

I think the one time we saw the real AM was after he had beaten Echols. He was overcome with emotion and seemed quite down to Earth. Now it's all talk and 'two-time'.
