Cool Enzo Calzaghe: Ricky's style isn't good enough to beat Pac

"Ricky's style isn't good enough to beat Pacquiao. Ricky's a gentleman, but I didn't see much improvement last time. Malignaggi had no ability and no bollocks. De La Hoya was a spent force but Pacquiao was still impressive. Good southpaws are hard to beat and Pacquiao's got very good technical skills. Pacquiao's got too many weapons. At this level, Ricky makes too many mistakes and Pacquiao will make him pay for them."

Enzo Calzaghe, Boxing Monthly, February 2009

Wow the legendary trainer is giving props to pacman.

I'm not sure whether anyone actually hold's him in a high regard as a trainer anyways, but it's pretty well a given that he's no authority on the sport. He is extremely lucky his son chose to stick with him as his coach, that's it. I can't say whether Joe would have been better off with another trainer or not, perhaps his dad was instrumental at getting him prepared mentally for fights. But as far as teaching him anything physical or having a fundamental grasp of the sport his opinion is worth about as much as Danny G's as far as I can tell. Look at the guys he has trained excluding his son. Hardly textbook fighters you would aspire to have young guys take notes from. May as well even lump Joe in there as well, he certainly didn't get to where he did because of all the skills his dad taught him.

There are the things you believe and the things you say because the guy is in your stable. Enzo has no stake in Pacquiao. I would say, if anything, he should have pushed for Hatton.

The style might not be good enough alone but Hatton has strength and and the agression to go with it which will help.
